He is awesome. I just wish I had the time to master the longbow like he has. I love the longbows I have and been shooting traditional archery for 4 decades. He has a school and I have been considering going to it. I had the honor to shoot a Fred Bear Custom take down recurve with Fred himself when I picked it up at the factory. Would love to spend a day with Byrun or two.

I have two longbows. Both are Martin Visions. One is 60# and one is 50#. I like the 50# better as it's more comfortable to shoot. The 60# is really a bit too much but it sure is fast.

If you keep at it every day you'd be surprised just how good you can get in a short amount of time.

Longbows and wood arrows are the only way to go.

If you do not know of the Traditional Bowhunters of Florida, you should go to one of their shoots. They have a web site. There are some guys there who are fantastic shooters. Their next state shoot should be in a few weeks in the Ocala National Forest.

Byron appeared at our National Hunting and Fishing Days celebration here in Southern Il. several years ago, I got to meet and talked with him at some length. As I have been shooting traditional since the early 70's and shooting and building longbows since the mid 80's, we had a lot in common. He is a right likeable feller and if you ever get the opportunity to see him shoot don't pass it up, he'll amaze you!

Thanks Bruce, you're right there are some great guys there. I was a member for about four or five years but it seemed like a lot of trouble for just two shoots a year.They do some really good work helping kids with cancer where they supply archery gear at a camp called Boggy Creek.

Howard Hill was also responsible for the returned popularity of archery. You should read his fascinating book titled, Hunting the Hard Way. Howard was selling his osage longbows about the time Fred Bear developed the use of commerical hydraulic press to build his laminated limbed recurve bows. These men and others such as Ben Pearson and Damon Howitt were innovators and splendid archers.

I hunted with a 45 lb. recurve bow from 1972 to 2007. My first was a Wing Archery Co. Redwing Hunter. That bow took down many mulies for me, mostly does or young forkies at 25 yards or less. Then in 1989, I had a 65 lb. custom take-down built by Owen Jeffrey. Although faster, it wears you out quicker, too.

Now I hunt with a crossbow by Ten Point. It's more far more accurate although substantially noisier. The noise factor is largely irrelevant because the bolt/arrow is already there by the time the deer hears it (too late). Crossbows are great fun with no recoil and no big scary bang. Are they modern cheating machines and unfair to "traditional" archers? Nope, crossbows have been used for hunting in Europe since approx. year 1150. Crossbows were widely popular during medieval times.

I'm considering selling my recurve bows.
