I asked you guys for suggestions for my boss for a coyote rifle a while back. He settled on a TC Encore in .22-250 and really likes it. He shoots coyotes with a buddy who keeps the pelts. So here's my question. What factory loaded ammo would do the least about of damage to coyote pelts? I know I might be asking a lot, probably should have picked a slightly less devastating caliber, but I thought I'd ask.
I found Barnes has a nice Bronze .22 cal solid that would do nicely, but I don't think it's loaded in any factory ammo. Any suggestions..?

I shoot Sierra 53gr. Match bullets in my .22-250 . The hide is still good on the side the bullet enters. Are Coyote half hides worth anything?

There are three schools of thought on this.
Plan A is you use a FMJ and just punch a hole. The theory is: it doesn't damage the pelt beyond the two small 22 caliber holes. The downside is: I found that sometimes the exit is a bit more violent(messy) than the theory and when it follows the theory the coyotes run away(literally a mile or more before dieing) seemingly uninjured. This leads to rapid reapplication of plan A until the bugger is out of range or dead.
Plan B theory is: a lighter varmint bullet that punches a 22 hole in and violently self destructs without an exit. The problem here is when it does exit it "really"(!!!) messes up the pelt.
Plan C theory(the one I use): uses a heavier solidly constructed bullet that expands in a controlled fashion much like a what you want shooting a deer. This doesn't always leave a non-messy exit but it's usually much better than Plan B and yo-TAY doesn't go far.
I would use the heaviest soft point my rifle would stabilize.

I agree with Buffboy. Find the heaviest "deer bullet" your rifle will shoot accurately.
