Errant arrow pierces man's head
Associated Press -- Oct. 14, 2001
BURLINGTON, Vermont -- An Underhill man shot in the back of the head
with an arrow while bow hunting is recovering slowly, according to his
family members.
Ron Derouchie, 24, was recovering at home Friday, Oct. 12, after his
brother, Brian, 22, fired an arrow into the back of his head.
The arrow penetrated Ron Derouchie's skull and pierced his brain,
stepmother Wendy Derouchie said.
The family is worried about whether the arrow caused lasting vision
damage.
Ron Derouchie is having trouble sleeping and not feeling well, but his
outlook is good, she said.
"He has a lot of headaches," Wendy Derouchie said. "He gets really
tired."
The brothers were hunting deer at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Underhill
when the incident occurred, said Lt. Robert Rooks, acting chief of law
enforcement for the Fish and Wildlife Department.
Police are treating the incident as accidental.
When Ron Derouchie shot, he bumped his brother, who had drawn his
arrow back and was preparing to release it, Rooks said. The bump
caused Brian Derouchie to swivel as he was shooting, and the arrow hit
Ron Derouchie in the back of his head, Rooks said.
The fact that the brothers were standing close together prevented the
accident from being worse, Rooks said.
"The arrow wasn't able to gain the momentum that it would, had it
actually been released," he said.
Ron Derouchie remained conscious and walked from the woods with his
brother, who was shaken by the incident, Wendy Derouchie said.
"As they came out of the woods, Ron was calming Brian down," she said.
Surgeons spent three hours removing the arrow.

According to a Forum Honcho elsewhere...
Seems like there is a nice, brain-numbing medicinal quality to MJ....
Hmmm....I had seen a DNR report on this instance some time back. It seems that the two brothers were "hunting" out of a ground blind over bait (illegal) and had smoked some wacky weed prior to the "accidental shooting".
The victim had already shot at a deer and missed when he moved over in front of his brother and got shot in the back of the head.

Good gravey Marie! I don't even know where to start!
Why wasn't he BEHIND the shooter-eh? I'm beginning to think common sense is rarer than platinum.
It certainly would be a hit for Bubba down at the Bucket of Blood saloon.
"Yep, how do ya' like my new head stick lil' darlin', got it from my brother on my birthday! Been lookin' fer one fer years. Little hard to put my Stetson on, better that havin' it on when he gave it to me".

Documented Proof
Documented proof the chisel points penetrate deeper through bone than cutting points! That would be considered a failure on a moose shoulder.

Yep...I agree Chuck...we need a national committee to investigate this incident headed by Barbara Milkulski & Upchucky Slimer.Chuck 100 yd wrote:All bows need mandated string block safetys on them! This would never have happened.
String guns are not safe in civilian hands. And, they should come under the new A**hole weapons act. No more than one arrow issued under penalty of ten thousand years in the electric chair.
Yep, that outa' curtail incidences like this, where common ordinary idiots no longer have access to pointy things including scissors.

This Bubba stuff is gettin on my nerve.
This happened in BURLINGTON, Vermont. Last time I checked that was yankee land. Now I do understand that rednecks are pretty much everywhere. But these two dope smokin yahoos couldn't qualify for redneck status. Heck they got frenchy names.
Just a proud Scots-Irish redneck opinion.

I saw that first time 3 years ago at least.
At the time the story I heard was he was filming a hunt & somehow his head ended up in the wrong place.
I can sorta see it, him following the deer with the camera, his buddy following the deer with his bow, thunk!
Anyway there wasn't any mention of drugs at the time & I dont recall where it suposedly happened.
He's just lucky his brother or buddy was bow hunting. I imagine a bullet woulda had plenty of momentum to make a big mess.

crawdaddyjim, Any rednecks up here are from away, ours are called Woodchucks, or, Ridgerunners if they don't get to town much.
Nice example of 3 blade broadhead/light arrow penetration, a 2 blade 3-1 ratio broadhead on a heavy arrow fed from a proper long bow would have poked his eye out!
You know the best thing about Burlington? It's as close as you can get to Vermont without actually being there...

Just a side note to whoever said the doctor was running up the bill by removing that section of skull...
I'm pretty sure he put it back. But he did have to take it out to make sure the brain didn't have any bleeders around the wound site.
Fortunately, that area of the skull is one of the thickest. Had the guy been shot in the temple, for instance, I'm sure the arrow might have passed all the way through.
One more time: can we all say OUCH!!
