An old acquaintance of mine had a 10 gauge like that one one time. He thought the large heavy weight in the butt-stock made the gun too heavy. So he took the weight out and added a low-power scope on the shotgun to make it into a slug gun. I tried to tell him that the weight was good, but he was determined. After he removed the weight, the danged shotgun didn't weigh much more than 6 pounds.
One afternoon I walked into his shop and he had a lump on his head bigger than an egg and a pretty good cut to go with it. I started laughing.
"You shot that scoped 10 gauge didn't you?" I asked when the laughter subsided.
Richard admitted that was the cause of the cut and lump. He told me that he'd managed to fire three rounds of 10 gauge slugs through the gun, getting hit in the head by the scope on every shot. Since the three slugs group "about the size of a lemon" at 75 yards, Richard declared himself happy with the sighting.
A couple of weeks later I walked in and right off the bat, Richard told me that he'd sold the H&R 10 gauge. I asked if he'd replaced the weight. He grinned and said, "Nope," as he held up the weight.
