OT- War between the States. Part 3.

Post by Gun Smith »

When I started this thread the other day it was about trivia. Since then it has taken a life of it's own. I am going to stay with trivia in future posts.

In Part 2 I asked a few questions. I received no answers, so I'll list them here in order.
1. Gatling Gun.
2. Spencer.
3. Monitor-Merrimac.
4. Hunley.
5. Railroad air brake.
6. Sewing machine

Part 3.

The FIRST Modern War.

FIRST organized and systematic care of the wounded on the battlefield.
FIRST widespread use of rails for hospital trains.
FIRST organized military signal service.
FIRST military reconnaissance from a manned balloon.
FIRST draft in the United States.
FIRST income tax- levied to finance the war.
FIRST Medal of Honor awarded to an American soldier.

One fourth of the officers in the United States Navy resigned to cast their lot with the Confederate navy. Of the 322 who resigned, 243 were line officers.

Confederate private Henry Morgan Stanley, survived a bloody charge at Shiloh only to be taken prisoner. Later he joined the Union ranks and finished the war in yankee blue. What is he more famous for in his later years?

In 1864 the basic daily ration for a Union soldier was(in ounces), beef-20, flour-18,
dry beans-2.56, green coffee-1.6, sugar 2.4, salt .64, also pepper, vinegar, candles, soap, and yeast powder in smaller amounts.

At the battle of Fredricksburg in 1862, the line of Confederate trenches extended a distance of seven miles. The troop density in these defensive works was 11,000 per mile.

The total cost of the war for the South has been estimated at 4 billion dollars.

Stanleyville in the Congo was named after him. After he asked the question, 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?'
