Savage 99 and Williams sight
I will soon start looking for a mod 99. I looked in the Williams cataloge and noticed that the FP is only available for tang safety models. It will fit on later models but have to be drilled and tapped. Has anybody installed these on the older models and was it difficult? I will probably look for a tang safety model since I'm left handed and it will be probably easier to use. Any comments on the old style lever safety and left hand use would also be appreciated. Are there any other peep sights out there for the 99? Thanks in advance.

Iceman a close friend of mine uses his lever safety style 99 left handed with no issues.
Over the years I've been amased at how you southpaws overcome so many of the handicaps that a righthanded gun world throws your way. My personal 99 wears a lyman peep.Ebay has them from time to time

good luck in your search. Win92

Not sure what caliber or age of 99 you're looking for but I think that sight will work on any 99 factory D&T'd for scope will work. Notice in the below link the aperture is to the rear of the screw holes and how close together they are. The FPs that were made for non drilled guns have the screw holes in back of the aperture.

Pics are of my lever safety 1960 vintage 99E factory drilled...It looks to me like the spacing is right for that sight.

If it has the tang safety I beleive it should be factory tapped for scope mounts. The williams foolproof would use those holes. The older Lymans are cooler but they won't work with a top safety. I'm not sure how the older style safety would work being left handed.
Iceman you didn't say what caliber?

Thanks for the answers. I'm not sure on caliber yet, probably 308. I sure would like to find a 284 but they are rare. I wouldn't refuse a 358 so time will tell.

My 1924 .30-30 TD wears a vintage Redfield tang mounted peep. Nice, accurate sight for the old girl.

Re: Savage 99 and Williams sight
I got a tang safety .308 mostly due to availability. I honestly wasn't interested in paying a premium price for a .300 Savage with a pistol grip.
