45-70 barrel replacement

Post by sullkat »

Good afternoon, I have been searching for a place to buy a new 45-70 barrel for a IMF hartford sharps.
VTI replica used to sell them but no longer do.
Any one know where I can order one?
Thanks.

You could have a gunsmith replace that barrel with a Badger, or Green Mountain barrel that are properly contoured for sharps actions, but do need to be threaded, chambered etc.

First let me say welcome Sullkat, glad you found us.

Gun Parts Corp is usually the best place to start a search. Is the present barrel damaged or are you just wanting something different?

You might end up going to a gunsmith who can fit something like a Green Mountain barrel for you.

Thanks for the responses and for the welcome.
The rifle currently has a 45-120 barrel, and I want to go to a 45-70.
The cost of the 120's are now more than I can handle and I don't have a place to reload.
On other forums the suggestion was made to just shoot the 70's in it but I think that would be a quick death for it.

Probably wouldn't be a quick death, but it most likely wouldn't be worth a flip for hitting anything after the first shot. That's a bunch of freebore for a bullet to jump, powder fouling, and leading would be awesome.

Track of the wolf said they have a 45-70 barrel ready to install but now I am not sure of the thread size are there a lot of differences between manufactures

The Italians use metric threads. But Uberti, and some Cimmarrons are all made by Pedersoli. Armi makes their own, plus some of cimmarrons, and Taylors.
Tell the boys at track what you have and they should be able to get you the right one.

Couldn't you just have the shoulder and threads cut back and use the same barrel?
Kind regards,

Not if its a standard Sharps type barrel. To get it back far enough from the 120 for the 45-70 you 'ld need to remove a full inch of the chamber, and that would eliminate the shoulder on most sharps type barrels, so there wouldn't be enough metal to thread for the receiver.
