I have an idea!

Post by bigbore442001 »

I was chatting with a friend Sunday at the club bar and he asked how well I did this past hunting season.

Anyways. He commented that while ice fishing they saw a pack of coyotes kill a deer that was stuck on the ice. The doe had slipped and splayed out on the ice when the pack came in and killed her.

I was thinking to myself. What if I set up a doe decoy such as those used for archery hunting and use a doe call. Make some distress calls, spray the area down with plenty of doe urine or doe musk and wear all white. Maybe have an isulated pad and lie prone wearing white downwind of the " doe" on the ice.

Anyone care to comment? Is it a stupid idea?

Saw some coyotes go after geese on a frozen lake in Colorado, as far as motor function on ice goes; the coyotes did not do well.
It was kind of funny watching them slip & slide.

I think you may be on to something, sounds like an awesome set up. Take pictures if you are successful. You could try adding feathers to the tail or ears of the decoy to add some movement and realism. I typically use a turkey wing feather attached to a bare camo arrow with a piece of string as a decoy. The slightest breeze will give it some motion. I have laid in a field of corn stalks with that decoy and no other cover and successfully called coyotes to with in 40 yards with a mouth call when the wind direction wouldn't permit anything else. That motion seems to really draw them in.

Around here we have Cracker Barrel Restaurants and they always have a gift area out front. One of the things they always seem to have is a little battery operated weasel that is playing with a ball. It rolls around in the box day in and day out. I was thinking of building a platform on a small post and putting plexiglass sides on it for the weasel to play on.
