OT: Musings from the Miller; What are the odds ...........

There is a piece of brown onion skin about the size of a quarter on the carpet in the walkway to the bedroom.

There are at least 7 possibly 8 cats inside at the time, four of them are juveniles.

What are the odds that one of these cats will amble through the house and stop in the exact place required to put their left front paw on that piece of onion skin?

What are the odds one of them would be one of the juveniles?

What are the odds it would be any specific one of them?

Spock, where are your when we need you?

6* here this morning. Nothing at all to some but I'm not used to it. Dog and I are taking it easy today. Mom was fine though, she was enjoying a church group this morning. I did need to clear a drain this morning. Oh yeah, exciting.

I've been thinking I need to do more reloading. Going to work on the .45-75 with Pyrodex and GOEX. Need to cast some more bullets (Lyman 457192).

That is one of my problems. I'm OK with temps in the mid to high 30s to 40s, but when they drop below freezing for two long I just feel like a big bear and want to hibernate.

I want to cast bullets too, got all the stuff to do it with, but I do not have a place to set up. This house is so small I can't set up inside, and the garage is so full I can't set up out there. And besides, it's too darn cold.

I suppose I could go load some ammo, but I'm even bored with that.

Okay Joe, my next suggestion would be a good long book. Go to your library and pick up "African Game Trails" by Theodore Roosevelt. It's got leverguns in it. If you've already read that I'll get back to you.

Joe -

I've been spending my time going to our two local gun shops and buying up primers and powder for reloading .38 Special ammo. This past week I've bought two pounds each of Hodgdon Universal Clays, Alliant Unique, and Alliant Bullseye. That's 42,000 grains of powder which will load roughly 7,000 rounds of .38 Special ammo @ 6gr of powder for each round. I also bought 8,000 Winchester Small Pistol Primers.

In order to keep busy for the next few weeks until the weather starts to improve, I'm going to build a new (additional) primer storage box and another powder storage box too.

Think positive Joe. It'll get better. Think of where you want to move to in either NM or AZ and other good thoughts.

Wasn't just cabin fever. By 7:00PM I was bundled up in a heavy sweat shirt shivering my self silly. I was freezing. House was plenty warm. Everything, every joint ached like someone had beat it with a ball peen hammer.

By the time my wife got home from work I was wishing I could just drop over dead and get it over with. She said the way I looked scared her. She hasn't seen me that sick in years.

I didn't even want any super and when I don't want food, I'm really not well. Went to bed finally about 10:30, actually quite early for us and slept for a couple hours. Woke up soaked in sweat, had to go to the bathroom. Good lord my joints did not want to move. They were so stiff I thought rigormortis (SP?) had set in. After that I passed out again and slept for a while.

Woke up this morning feeling better, but no good enough to go to the range. Nice day too.

Hope you're feeling better as the day goes along. I got about 5K .38Specials & about 2K of .45 Colt to load... hint... hint... but I won't get started till sometime next week when I get home. "She-who-must-be-obeyed" tells me I can have 10 days at home... then back to the salt mines!

Come the end of March you should take some time off and start redecorating one of the rooms.
When SWMBO asks what your doing tell her you're gonna sell off all the trucks and start a home business and this is gonna be your office.
That should be a great April fools joke.

I'm doing pretty decent right now, compared to yesterday. I've got a couple guns that need cleaning. One of them hasn't been cleaned since before last April. It's probably rusting away just for spite.
Then I do have some newly acquired 454424HP bullets to process and get ready for loading.

So I should be OK in a while. If the weather holds I'll go burn some powder this weekend.

Joe, I've never seen Selleck's movie, although another L'Amour fan told me just this past Sunday that the movies are not the same as the book(s). Joe, if you've never read Louis L'Amour, then you ain't read nuthin'! Most of the stories take place in the Old West. The Sackett series starts in England (the first book) and then moves to America and follows the Sackett descendants up into the Old West. Man, I cannot encourage you enough to get your hands on those books. Start with 'Sackett's Land'.

Ol' Man L'Amour didn't always get his guns right... but he could spin a yarn. The movie "Sacketts" ain't exactly the same as the books, but close enough that thhe characters are recognizable.

The Sackett Stories by Louis L'Amour contains a pretty comprehensive list and good overview.

I have only read about half of his books so far (two more down this week), but one thing that does impress me about L'Amour's books is his knowledge of the Old West guns. He mentions quite a few obscure guns. The Colt SAA does make an appearance from time to time, but so do the S&W top break 44's and a few that a fellow seldom hears about (like the shotgun with the rotating cylinder that I didn't even know existed until he mentioned it and then I did some research.) I haven't come across the error's that Griff refers to, but he gets enough right to be a lot better than any other writer I've come across.

Wish I could remember an example or two off the top of my head, but alas, 'tis not to be. And, you're right, he does include many more models & manufacturers than other writers. His errors, IMO, tend to have been in operation or handling, and in a couple instances ISTR, they didn't seem right for the timeframe of the story. Maybe that's just my perception as he seldom mentions a date. But nothing as glaring an author I just finished reading about an 1980's NY detective who "flips off the safety of his 38", (after being described as DA revolver. After Doc Hudson's post last month in "Historically Correct Movies", this just flat out jumped off the page at me. Other than that, it was an excellent read.

Griff, now that you mention it, I do recall a possible operational error in one of the stories where, I believe, the fellow was using a cap and ball sixgun, but I cannot recall the details. Overall, however, his stories seem to be well researched. One fellow told me that the geography in all his stories is real.

Yeah, I could just see that. Jump from below freezing to 115° in one move. Can we say heat stroke boys and girls? I'd love to come down to Australia. But they won't let me bring my guns and ammo. Will they ?????? Nah, I'll bet not.

Oh, and there is no way I'm going out on the beach looking like I look. They'd all think a white whale got beached. That would be embarrassing.

Although there is one way I'd come down ... get me front or second row center seats to a Kylie Minogue concert. That would do it.

She's famous world wide, but not so much here in the U.S.. I find that quite unfortunate because she is class and panache incarnate. She put most of the female singers in the U.S. to shame.
I saw her in person in Phoenix in 1988 right after her version of "Locomotion" was released. She was on stage doing a promotion performance for a local radio station. She was just beginning then.
I guess you say I've been in love with her ever since then.

Griff, old friend, I'm sorry but I just gotta say this: I quit listening to C (crying) or W ( whining ) cos it depresses me no end. Besides the current stuff shounds like rehashed bad 60's and 70's rock.
