Cimarron 1873, replacing the magazine tube

Post by Otto »

How difficult is this? I'm not mechanically inclined, but I have done some minor repairs on various things. Could someone briefly describe the process? Are there nay special tools needed?

How difficult is this? easy I'm not mechanically inclined, but I have done some minor repairs on various things. Could someone briefly describe the process? See below Are there nay special tools needed? I would recommend a set of hollow ground screwdrivers so you don't bugger up the screws, such as: Chapman, or IMO better, Mag-Na Tip Set .

Generally, alll you need to do is to make sure the gun is unloaded; using a correctly fitted screwdriver, remove the screw from magazine plug. Keep ahold of the plug as the magazine spring will shoot it out into the least accessible place you have. If a carbine (2 barrel bands), remove their screws, the magazine will generally slip out thru them, unless it' been adly deformed. If it has, you may have to cut the tube, try to avoid this, try slipping a dowel inside to get it back to some semblence of round 1st. If a rifle (no barrel bands, 1 magazine ring), remove the magzine ring pin and slide the mag out. You may have to remove the two screws for the forend cap if its applying any pressure on the tube. Inboth cases the forearn will come off once the magazine is removed, be careful not top lose the follower or the forend cap tenon if a rifle.

Additional help: Winchester Improved Henry (Model 1866) and Model 73 Lever Rifle and Carbine Disassembly/Re-assembly Instructions.

EDIT: And if you need to buy new parts: VTI Gun Parts

I did this on my Uberti 73 rifle recently, only thing I would add to Griff's post is lube the outside of the tube so it slips thro' the mount ring easily, you don't want to scratch it :!:
