I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the correct front sight height for two winchester pre-64 guns. When looking at replacement front sights on midway, there appears to be about a million diff heights and bead diameters.
1. This is my dads (it was his dad's). It was made in 1899 and originally in 38-55. At some point it didnt shoot straight anymore so my grandpa had it rebarreled to 30wcf. It looks like he might have kept the original rear sight, but the 'new' barrel has one of the built in ramps. I'll include some pictures so you can get an idea about the barrel and rear sight. The bead part and some of the top thin part of the front sight are broken off so I want to order a new front sight for it. I'm wondering what height to order and what bead size to order. It has a 20" barrel. I would just measure it, but its at my dad's house which is not close.
2. The second gun is a Win 94 in 32WS made in 1949. I just had it rebarreled with a factory replacement barrel from the same period (also 32WS). When the gunsmith rebarreled it he kindly scrounged around and found a front and rear sight to put on it. The front sight he put on says lyman and it is currently too tall to use with the rear sight that is on it. Shoots low with rear sight all the way up. However, I plan to add a williams 5D receiver sight to this gun. So.... I either need to replace the front sight with a shorter one (maybe it would be the same size as the one required by first gun i asked about) OR let me know if the williams can work with a taller front sight. I can measure the current tall front sight tonight as I have this gun at home.
My suggestion would be: Don't deal with Midway call Brownells and they have people on staff who can answer any question you have? Midway's ever rising shipping costs have driven me away from dealing with them, recently.
