Question on Henry .357's

Post by retmech »

Two of my friends have ordered Henry .357's and are starting to load for them. They want to load the Lyman "Keith" SWC bullet in the .357 case and crimp in the crimp groove. That will give a cartridge over all length of 1.660". That oal is a problem in Marlin 94's as it's too long to feed but ok in the Winchester 94's. Having never worked with a Henry can anyone tell me if that oal will work in the Henry .357? Thanks in advance. Nick

Well, there's one way to find out....Just think of it as a "learning experience"....like the time I found out a Sierra 200-gr. jhp in a .44 Special case was too short for proper feeding in my Marlin 1894...

We plan to do that. I was just trying to find out in advance so that we could load some up before he gets the gun. With the gun in hand I'll know pretty quick if it has any oal limitations with the "Keith" bullet and mag brass.

"IF" the Henry .357 is the same action as the Henry .45 Colt I looked at, you "should" be able to use the longer bullet. The .45 Colt I looked at was built on the long action like the 30-30 Henry.
It might take a bit of custom adjusting on the carrier, but it should be doable.

A call to Henry might answer the question. I hear their customer service is excellent.

IIRC the Lyman 358429 168 grain Keith is crimped on the forward driving band.

Yep, just looked it up. 1.553" OAL
Kind regards,
Tycer

They do it that way so that it meets SAAMI specs and can be loaded in short cylinder wheel guns such as gp 100's and S&W 27's. I crimp in the crimp groove in my 94 winnie for better accuracy.

I tried that and was given the SAAMI standars story.
Thanks for the replys, like I said I guess we will just have to wait till he gets the rifle. Nick
