OT Bolt gun Day

Post by 2ndovc »

Was cleaning some stuff I haven't had out in a while..

My Dad's father was a dedicated Bolt Gun guy and really into custom lightweights.

One of his favorites was a Japanes Arisaka that was sporterized and rechambered to .257 Roberts.
She sports an 18 1/2" Barrel, new trigger and guard assembly, Williams reciever sight and new ramp front sight.
Weighs about 6 pounds.
My Grandfather took several deer and a bunch of antelope with this rifle.

Still has the Mum on the receiver

I got it as a 18th Birthday present. Has always been one of my favorite trail guns.
He made up hundreds of .257 lead RNGC bullets that I'm still shooting.

Now before you guys start _____ about screwing up and original Arisaka. I doubt
My Grandfather paid more than ten dollars for it before he had it worked over. Was
just the thing to do in those days.

The 70 Gr lead RN Gas checks work great on our woodchucks. A big one runs about twenty pounds Plus. Been loading
the same bullet in my .25-20 Cadet rifle. Have only punched paper with that one so far.

Too late now! Once upon a time that is ALL they were good for. At least he put a good Williams Foolproof on it!

I used to object strongly to sporterised military rifles.
Then I got a beautiful sporterised Rem '03 Springfield for a song.
It shoots as good as any rifle that I have ever owned.
Someone thought enough of the old girl to put some serious time and money into it.
I can almost feel the pride of the person who did the alterations.

I've come to believe that the customising of military guns is an important part of our history.
Somehow, a sporter that gets used vs. a safe queen that will never be seen in public, gets my approval.
I'm not encouraging folks to chop up rare collectables in mint condition, but I can't see any reason to turn my nose up at a nicely executed sporter.
I can't imagine anyone turning their nose up at a Sedgley Springfield.
