OT for JReed and the other Marines here

Post by awp101 »

I know we all give each other a hard time with the inter-service rivalries but we all also respect the efforts of the other branches. In my digging around the internet for something recently, I ran across this website and I thought you Devil Dogs (and the rest of us) might enjoy it:

MY son was working the other day and he got to talking to an older fellow that came into the store. He was a China Marine. My son knew some of the history of them from talks I've had with him so the old guy was a little impressed that Jr. at least knew what he'd done. Jr. said as the old timer walked away he stopped and turned back around and said, " oh and by the way, I enlisted." It made my son's day to finally talk to a China Marine.

I like it !!

What are the three most dangerous things in the world?

!. Fire in the magazine

2. A second lieutenant with a pen

3. A sailor with a gun.

And, for other Marines:

AIRSPACE VIOLATION PROTOCOLAccording to a Marine Pilot:

In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defence Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace.

This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination.

I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe toDubai . It's too good not to pass along. The conversation went something like this...

Air Defence Radar: 'Unknown aircraft at (location unknown), you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.'

Aircraft: 'This is aUnited Statesaircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'

Air Defense Radar: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'

Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait!'

Just so's all you jarheads understand, we sailors are happy to provide you safe, clean and efficient transportation and excellent "home-cooked" meals on your way to and from your playtime in the sandbox, humidifier or other parts of the globe our Commander-in-Chief so designates. We understand that you'll not likely have such 1st rate accomodations during your playtime, and thru your training and general inclination are not likely to show any gratitude except thru disparaging remarks toward your hosts. So, we can, do enjoy letting such commentary and behaviorisms slide by like water off a duck's back. :) :P

'Sides, your beaches have been pre-approved for landing by our Seals and sufficiently graded for easy marching by the Sea-Bees.

Hopefully, you Marines will also remember that it is a Navy Corpsman that pulls those little splinters out of you little fingers and toes and throw caution to the wind to administer to your broken bodies on the battlefield.

You'll probably be happy to know that - to be totally honest, I was a Marine in that I was really a Naval Medical Officer serving as the Assistant Battalion Surgeon in beginning in 1949 - this picture was taken in 1950 - by that time the guys in my battalion thought I was really a Jarhead and that suited me! Matter of fact, the day I reported in, I was advised by the battalion commander medical people were considered non combatants but they were going to the range that day to shoot and I was invited to go with them. My enthusiastic reply was that I would never be a non-combatant and I appreciated the invitation (he didn't know that, in my younger days in depression time, all my money I could get went for guns and ammo). To be offered an M1 Garand, ammo, and a range for the shooting - all free - convinced me I did right by asking for that asssingment

If you were a Marine and were told this young looking kid was your Battalion Surgeon - would that have inspired confidence or just given you one more reason to try to avoid getting wounded?

Actually, I was Lou Diamond's last doctor - being TDY at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in September, 1951 and, before any clown here asks what my friends here do - NO, THAT WASN'T THE REASON HE DIED !!

Marines have always considered Corpsmen Marines.

That's why we call 'em CORPSmen.

I think many know that of those six guys (one of the guys in the middle) raising the flag at Iwo Jima was a Navy Corpsman - Pharmacist Mate Second Class John Bradley - who earned and was awarded the Navy Cross - second only to the Medal Of Honor.
