a fine day at the range

Post by new pig hunter »

decided to enjoy one last 2008 range day .... perfect weather, bright and sunny here in SoCal, nice and warm.

Put the target at 100 yards and opened the session with the Marlin 444SS, only it's second time on the range. The first two boxes of ammo were Wisconsin Cartridge ammo, 240-gr bullet. Great accuracy, nice groups. I had a filled 1/2-gallon heavy/thick plastic water jug which exploded quite nicely when hit, made more "spectacular" with the addition of red food color to better see the water. Also, the 240-gr bullet moved a bowling pin around quite nicely.

Interspersed with those 40 rounds were lots of rounds of .22-250 on paper and on the bowling pin. Great accuracy, that has become one of my favorite rifles, it makes me look like I know what I'm doing.

Then I switched back to the Marlin to try 2 boxes of Leverevolution ammo (265-gr bullet) courtesy of Santa. Quite a bit more shoulder thump. And it literally knocked the stuffing out of the bowling pin. The bullet would hit the pin and spin it around and around and around, pushing it further downrange than the 240-gr bullet. I even heard some guy on the shooting line say, "Wow, somebody's on target today, look at that pin move around."

Interspersed with the Leverevolution ammo I did some shooting with the Mini-14. Accuracy not so hot on paper but I had no problem hitting the bowling pin almost every time.

As for the Marlin, I think I'll go back to the 240-gr ammo for the steady diet. After 40 rounds of the 265-gr ammo, my eyeballs are still dancing.

All in all: a fabulous day !!

Cheers,

Carl

Look here Carl, When you say "sunny and warm", its really boiling my blood. :D I'm off tomorrow, and clear up to Monday, but right now, its 20 degrees and the wind in blowing 30 mph. Supposed to be cold & windy right through the weekend

Well, glad someone is having a good time. :D Shoot some cast gas checked bullets out of the .444. You can push a 240-300 gr. bullet anywhere from 1000-2000 fps and really make those pins dance, all the time on a small expense.

Your Mini-14 shoots like the one I used to have. Not much on paper, but dazzling on rocks, etc-------------------Sixgun

It's good to see someone got to the range.

Mini-14's in my experience are very reliable, but not real good in the accuracy department. Especially after getting a little warmed up. I'll take my LAR15 anyday.

sixgun,

sounds like it's time to move left a few miles, we could use a few more Kali taxpayers (who like warm weather) to help pay Arnold a salary he may not deserve and certainly doesn't need.

Cheers,

Carl
