OT- Help with some BP guns?

Post by TedH »

A friend of mine's father recently passed away. He had several firearms that now need to be sold to raise some money. My friend asked my help in appraising and selling these guns. Most are cap and ball repros and I have no idea what a used black powder revolver is worth. There are two Pietta's, an 1858 Target .44 with adjustable sights and a loooong barrel, and a 1851 .44. There's a couple CVA's, an 1863 Remington Pocket Revolver with some rust and missing front sight, and a .36 cal 1851 that has some internal issues with the lockwork. Also an unmarked 1858 .44 cal, in good condition. Have no idea of the maker on that one. These are all brass frames.

He also has a single action .22 revolver marked H Schimdt Ostheim/Rhoem in fair condition.

More interesting guns are a Stoeger Luger .22LR, and a Uberti 1875 Remington 45 Colt. These are both in very good condition and I have found some examples on Gunbroker to get some idea of values.

Mostly just wanted some opinions on the BP revolvers. I may end up listing them all here in the classifieds soon, so keep an eye out if something interests you.

EDIT: I did take some pics, but the lighting was poor and the pics don't show much detail. If anyone wants pics of a specific gun let me know and I'll send it.

This is really tough without pictures because nothing depreciates like a replica black powder revolver. Depending on condition and quality, they can range from $10-150 for brass framed guns. The brass 1858 remingtons really don't hold their value very well, even the Pietta's. The colt copies are a little better. That is not saying there's anything wrong with the brass guns, just the way it is.

Only one I'd be interested in is the 1851 .36 as a parts gun.
"People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for rule by brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically 'right.' Guns ended that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work."

+1

Brass-framed repo's are great entry-level guns for folks just starting into cap & ball shooting, especially if they aren't going to shoot them too much, or use stout loads. But as Buffboy noted, they lose their value immediately after purchase, and that's for the NIB ones. Any wear or tear, rust, etc, and the value drops to almost nothing PDQ.

I'd post them here with pictures and you'll probably get a good idea from the group what each may be worth.

I kind of figured that about the brass framed repros. Let me talk it over with him and we'll see if we can put some numbers with them and I may post them in the classifieds.
