So far this deer season... one meat buck

Post by O.S.O.K. »

Here's the result of my last hunt in Miss with my buddy Smitty. We both had ID'd this deer as a nice doe which is what I wanted to take that trip. It came out right on que and definately the one that we both had expected - but alas, it turned out to be a button buck - the horns barely poking through and not visible through a scope or binoculars. But, he's good eating! Very mild and tender.

Here I am with him in my stylish overalls and muck boots just before going to work on him :)

And here he is close-up - looked like a good sized doe in the scope!

As you can see, Smitty has a very nice place - that covered skinning rack is wonderful when its raining! The hose and sink are right there too.

Wish I could say that I used my Marlin 356 but I chose the Stevens .270 that morning - due to the length of the possible shots - along a powerline - this one was taken at 140-160 yards though... so the 356 would have done just fine... oh well - maybe next trip. I'm going back to hunt with my boss the end of January (Miss has a long season) and I think I'll only take my lever so I won't be tempted to use a bolt gun.

Thanks, yes his place is very well thought out. He's got 151 acres - mostly wooded and has 20 different stand locations all around the property. He lives in Jackson right now and plans on moving up to this property once he retires. Its really a hunter's paradise!

I'm very fortunate that he shares this with me, and I try and do things to help him out like purchasing new stands and the like from time to time. He's a good friend.

Congrats on the deer. I enjoyed meeting you and Smitty on the August trip. Both of you I would consider good peeps!

Good times and good friends, perfect :D

Where did you hit him and what happened? Hand load or other? I ask as I love the 270.

That buck is sure better than nothing, and antlers are tough to eat no matter how big or little!
