OT (Not levergun) - Need Advice .270 Barnes Bullet
I had a load worked up for the 150 gr. Hornady SP for my Ruger Model 77 .270; but now (of course) I have to figure out a good loading using all copper bullets for my area.
My rifle is 1 in 10 twist, so (according to Barnes) I should not load their 150 grainers. Since I want a sufficiently heavy load to work at around 200 yards on California deer for this scoped rifle, I am left with the Barnes 130 gr. TSX BT and the 140 gr. TSX BT (which I suspect would be the better choice for retaining downrange energy with good results on game).
I need to order some bullets before prices rise and before internet firearms related sales are declared to be illegal (we just don't know, do we?). I only wish to order one type, since they are pricey. Any advice from those who have already gone there would be appreciated!

Use 57 grains of RL 19 with 130s and 55 with 150s - great load in 4 different rifles. I think whatever bullet shoots best in your rifle will be fine.

BTW, I get around 2950 to 3050 fps with 130s with that load depending on the individual rifle.

Excellent - that is the range that I would like. Thanks again.

Check out my post from back in November.

I use the Barnes Triple Shock 110 gr .277 dia (6.8mm) using WLR's and Remington brass w/ 48.5gr. of IMR 4895 @ 3000 fps. They could probably be hot rodded a little more, but I don't see the need.
They're a killer with mild recoil.

One nice thing about a 270 Winchester, 130's, 140's & 150's all shoot at the same POI.
At least they did when I had a 270.

53 grains of W760 with the 130 TSX. I would use that on any deer. The 130 TSX is likely to penetrate as well as a standard 150 grain load and shoot a lot flatter.
My Stevens 200 shoots this load into 7/8" at 100.

Thanks, all.
110 gr. - who would have thought that this would be an effective deer round? But I remember reading that posting, now; I must have not paid close enough attention to the light weight. Those great pictures take away all doubt as to that bullet's effectiveness, at least on that deer!
Having juggled in my noodle everything that I've read above, I'm going to go for the 130 grain bullet and see what happens!

Good choice Johnde, really you don't need to worry about sticking to 150grners for deer at 200yds and then some. May be if you was takling a moose or large elk.
It is an excelent cartridge, Winchester scored big time with this one.
Let us know how it goes.

Why don't you try coming up to Northern CA above Sacramento and try hunting in C1, C2, C3, C4, and some other areas that have walk-in, across the counter, deer tags. No lead ban there -- at least not yet.JohndeFresno wrote:I had a load worked up for the 150 gr. It's hard for me to get away for very long, and Bass Lake and the Sierra Forest outside of Yosemite is is pretty short drive for me; and I know the country better. But it may come to that. I had better results way up in Trinity County, many years ago; but I didn't have a clue about the country without the help of a local who hunted with me.
Nath, next year I plan to do my hunting. Family situations keep me pretty close to home right now, except for range time and occasional local bird hunts. This year I've selected all of the firearms needed, am reloading, etc. I recently cut back in hours from a hugely demanding job, which crowded out all of my really important time - hunting, hiking, fishing!
