Front sight question

I have 2 marlins with factory sights, a 444 and a 45-70. Both shoot high at 50 yards. The 45-70 about 8" and the 444 about 12". I know I need taller front sights, but is there a way to calculate how tall the front sight should be?

I prefer post type sights, so I just buy the tallest one and file it to size while I am at the range.

That's a great link there - I bookmarked it - thanks. I would suggest ordering a couple of different ones and taking them to the range with you - speaking from experience!

I've changed so many front (and rear) sights, I can do it with an educated guess. For your 8" problem, add about .100 (1/10") The 12 inch problem should be cured by adding about .125, or about an 1/8"-------------Sixgun

Sixgun you are very close with your #'s. I measured the first one and you were close enough that I am going to take your word for it on the second.

Sixgun, I'm like that when I sight in a gun, I can usually get one shooting in the bull after one or two adjustments. When I install new sight/s I just aim down the barrel and adjust them without shooting a shot, gets me on paper every time.

Its like anything else. Guys like Salvo and myself have been doing this for so long, it has become second nature. When acquiring a new/old caliber I have never played with, and one that there is little to no loading info on, I just pick a starting load out of my head, based on case capacity. I even have an educated guess on the velocity. And when I chronograph that load, I am "right on" (and I don't mean the "brothers"--- "right on")
