Recent Production Chaparrals?
I know the quality consistency of Chaparral Arms leverguns with the 1876 Winchester clone in particular left allot to be desired? Have they improved in recent history? I know Uberti makes a better product for about $200 more but Uberti does not make the NWMP style full stock muskets which I really like as they resemble the 1876 Muskets carried by the Royal Hawaiian Guards of which my deceased uncle had several of in his collection of Winchesters. I wish Uberti made a 1876 Musket.
Re: Recent Production Chaparrals?
I WOULD STICK WITH THE UBERTI OR CIMARRON
I STILL HERE ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH CHAPPARAL
I ALSO DONT LIKE THAT SOME OF THEIR STOCKS ARE LAMINATED..
BUT I DONT THINK THE MUSKET STOCK IS LAMINATED....
THE UBERTI IS NEXT ON MY WISH LIST!

Re: Recent Production Chaparrals?
The are about out of the business. The rifles are now being discounted out by CDNN and about 3/4 oflast years prices, NO GUARENTEE. I have yet to see one that didn't have some type of problem, fit , finish, chamber, bores ect. I actually received one with the rear sight cut twice, so you had two grooves off center with a thin BLADE in between. That shows me that noboody even LOOKs at the gun before it is shipped. If you want a kit to rebuilld and can do the work yourself and you don't care about shooting the gun, go for it.

My Chaparral `76` .50-95 seems to be just fine and has had no problems.
I am still working up loads for it though. The stock is not laminated but has a dry looking finish on it (somthing I will change).

Chuck your 50-95 is a beauty, how long ago did you pick her up? I hear CDNN has the Chaparrals for $699 so tempting but stories like these scare me: http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=38549
Wasn't there an outfit that sold the NWMP models after going over them or having tighter standards of acceptance thus keeping the model they sold on a consistently higher standard? I've been paying $300 a month on medical insurance for myself eating away what little is left of my savings but never having to use it since my termination so like flushing $300 a month down the toilet, so I'm seriously considering canceling this and buying myself this toy, but I still want a decent reliable toy.

Re: Recent Production Chaparrals?
I bought last summer off of GunBroker. It came from a dealer of CASS stuff down south.
I agree that Uberty branded rifles are of the best quality but for the money these are just fine IMHO. The fit and finish (other than the final finish on the stock) is just super. Wood to metal fit is great, metal finish is super and the action and bore are better than anything Winchester put out for several years before they shut down.

Do all of the 45/60 chambered rifles require the thinning of the cut down 45/70 brass rims. I'm cheap & lazy and don't have a metal lathe.
I'm guessing the 45/60 still the cheapest way to go reloading wise. Can use my 45/70 dies right?

Ji - I think you hit the nail on the head - the quality is inconsistent for the Chaparral's. The one I have is good, though the fit and finish are not equal to the Uberti's I have (other types of guns). You do need to thin down the rim if using .45-70 brass, but all you really need is a drill press and file, then follow Kirk's instructions. You are going to trim down the length anyway. The .45-60 brass is great - and it's great to have the correct headstamp - but it isn't cheap!GANJIRO wrote:Do all of the 45/60 chambered rifles require the thinning of the cut down 45/70 brass rims.
