OT Questions about the New Vaquero

Post by Otto »

1. Is the ejector housing steel or aluminum?

2. Is the new version still beefier than a Model P?

3. Does the barrel still have the novel on the side?

4. Can the lock be removed from the grip? Are different parts needed?

5. Throats?

6. Are there one-piece wood grips available?

Thanks for any info.

Otto,

I'll answer your questions in order:

1. Is the ejector housing steel or aluminum?
Steel

2. Is the new version still beefier than a Model P?
A bit, but not significantly so. For ammunition purposes it should be considered to be in the same strength level as the Colt SAA and other copies.

3. Does the barrel still have the novel on the side?
No, they moved it to the bottom.

4. Can the lock be removed from the grip?
Yes.
Are different parts needed?
You'll have to fabricate a main spring strut support to replace the lock assembly.

Here is a pic of a custom main spring support meant to replace the lock.

5. Throats?
Hit or miss. Some are good, some aren't.

6. Are there one-piece wood grips available?
Most likely not. The grip frames are still one piece.

Thanks for any info.
Your welcome.

Joe

I will add that the lock isn't intrusive. You have to modify the grips or remove them to use it. If you want a Colt type gun, get a USFA or a Colt...

I like my NV AND I like my USFA guns. However, USFA is going to go to another, supposedly safer, hammer as standard.
1. All USFA Core Production will ship with USFA's New Patent Pend. Safety Hammer. This new invention still uses a rigid firing pin and maintains the classic profile of the historic SAA Type Hammer. This new feature will allow the user to store the firearm with the firing pin removed affording complete safety. No other firearms maker provides this security.

This new invention also saves manufacturing costs and ease of service/ cleaning and repair. While allowing different types of firing pins (traditional center fire, center fire magnum, and rimfire) to be used in the same hammer body.
with this additional comment
In addition, USFA has begun the approval process for Mass. Drop Test Compliance.

An historic hammer can be ordered at extra cost when placing your order for core product offering. The historic hammer will still be standard on most custom shop product.

All orders accepted for delivery on the books by Jan 15, 2009 can still be delivered with the older hammer design.
and
3. Beginning in Jan, 2009, serial numbers on core production will now only be placed on the frame toe. They will be eliminated from the front of the trigger guard and backstrap.

The Old Armory Original™ Series will continue to feature the traditional numbered locations.

Old Armory Original™ Series. Models Included in Series and offered with the new Old Armory Original™ features: Henry Nettleton, Custer Battlefield, Gunslinger, Sheriff Model, and US Pre-War.
The next SA I get will be a COLT.
Sincerely,

Hobie

My grandson has two NV's in .357 and is really happy with them just the way they are.

Thanks everybody. I guess all I need is a pair of grip panels and I'll be good to go. Hobie, those USFA's are nice, but I already have a pair of Cimarrons, and was looking for something with a transfer bar. As far as I know that means Beretta or Ruger.

It could be that Otto is of the same mind set I am. I hate and despise the key locks and simply will not own a gun so equipped. I'd like to have a New Vaquero too, but the very first thing I'd do would be take that stinking lock out and toss it. Intrusive, or unobtrusive, is irrelevant. The fact that it's there is bad enough.

So USFA is going to ruin their product line. They've already priced themselves out of my ability to buy one. Now they acquiesced to the blood sucking lawyers and the commie state of MA so I have zero interest in them.

Pretty much. It's almost enough to make me not buy one at all.
