Mechanical Advantage... Lever vs Wheel/Pulley

Post by Old Ironsights »

Well, after mising out on a perfect day yesterday (Dec 23) and seeing TEN deer in my back yard... (one a button buck that let me get within 6 feet of him...) that Neighborliness (not law) wouldn't let me arrow, I decided to finish busting the ice off the stand and sit from dawn to noon in my UDZ/Park (had to be home by one to help get ready for the inlaws...)

Anyway, today was a balmy 35 and misty/rainy. Better than Monday, but not as nice as yesterday (Saturated wool is HEAVY... but warm).

At about 8:30 a little pod of 6 does moved in... on the off side of the stand (of course) and nosed around a bit.

One started staring at me and moved off a ways, but 2 others came just enough closer that I had a decent shot (I thought).

Now, working this tiny property, in town, I'm really paranoid about a quick kill. 100yds in the wrong direction means somebody's back yard.

SO I get a nice 40pace (35+yds?) broadside to one of the two does, who look like they are moving away. Pin On and I see I have really tight window to keep from hitting brush... so I sort of twisted & crouched on my stand into the window and took the shot.

THWUP - rattle - Crack? Crack? No wonderful hollow drum sound? Danged arrow hit that stupid branch anyway.

Whatever, the doe went down like she had been poleaxed. The other doe just stood there wondering what had just happened.

Sadly, I didn't have a second permit or I might have taken a second shot.

Anyway, I waited a bit, saw NO movement, then climbed down.

Un....beleivable.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good...

My deflected arrow hit her IN THE EYE. The Rage 2 opened up perfectly and left a 2"gash from above the eye to below the eye then buried itself in the back of the skull.

Instantly dead as a post. At least I didn't have to trail her - like I would have had I hit that broadside perfectly.

Well, it has to be about as instantaneous and humane a death possible, although horrific to visualize.

Well, it's hard to argue with results. That should be some good eatin'.

I was bowhunting with my brother a few years ago. We were side by side near the edge of an old cut when out walks a doe (mulie). He asked me to range her, so I did, at 45 yards. We practiced a lot back then, so the distance was within our comfort zone.
At the THUMMM of the bowstring the doe crouched down and turned her head towards us. CRACK! She put her skull right over her lung area and the arrow when right through her head.
A few years before that a buddy of mine was bowhunting elk. He shot at a cow but the arrow deflected off a branch AROUND a tree and killed a spike.
It's better to be lucky, sometimes.

It will kill them dead, but the eyesocket is hard to aim for..

Last year my cousin took a doe thru one lung. She stayed within bow range and went to coughing/hacking/miserable death. So he nocked another arrow and aimed for her ear. She moved a bit and got her right behind the eye, instant death with a NAP shockwave expandible.

Congratulations! Nice shot.

OI My son and I went to a WMA last year and while we were on our way out we stopped at the check station to see if anyone else was having any success. One fellow there had arrowed a little 60 lbs hog right between the eyes.
He said he didn't really mean to shoot him there, he was aiming further back and it jumped the string. I don't remember what kind of broadhead he was using but I remember it was one of those expandable types with a very solid center point. I use a longbow and shoot Magnus cut on contact broadheads. I'm not sure they'd have the strength to penetrate a tough skull like that. I know Magnus will stand behind their product and will replace any head that gets deformed in any way. I know people who have hit concrete block walls with them and the company claims they want to see the failures for the knowledge they gain from them.

She was looking right at me when I released.I figure the arrow skimmed the branch and deflected just enough in flight to rise up & right by the 18" or so from POA.

Well, not the results you were going for, but a successful hunt none the less. Well done and enjoy your venison
