OT---We Are Not The First
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt.
People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."
Cicero, 55 BC

Re: OT---We Are Not The First
I think we do indeed learn from history. The problem in my opinion began when we allowed non-landowners (today, I'd call em tax payers) to vote.
People that pay taxes tend to be a little more informed than non-taxpayers. At least, they usually care what happens to their money.
It'd be even better if only people that could pass a history and current political events exam would be allowed to vote.
I think we are indeed seeing the fall of Rome replayed - only much much much more rapidly.

Re: OT---We Are Not The First
What's irritating is that 'we' set up shop in North America, and 'started over' - worked for awhile, until we created a good thing, with a free-market economy, Constitution, etc. - then the hordes of lazy leeches and socialists took over. Fifty years later when it is a mess like the countries they fled from, they'll be too stupid to realize they CAUSED it.jd45 wrote:We need to set up shop on Mars & start over. And yes, I realize it wasn't a 'good thing' for the American Indians; in many ways they should have kicked us out for good, but 'we' had better war (vs. battle) skills, and the advantages of more organizational structure and technology. Call it social evolution, or just evil, but 200 years later that's just how it worked out; none of us here participated in it one way or the other.
If you're a kid, and save money and do chores for materials and labor, and wind up building yourself a nice treehouse - pretty soon the neighborhood lazies who watched television while you toiled, will show up and say it's not 'fair' unless you let them play too. It will probably be THEIR lardy selves who finally break the supports and it comes tumbling down. Then they'll probaly sue you.

Re: OT---We Are Not The First
Our new POTUS is saying that he will duplicate the actions of FDR. He is trying to set up new deal type work programs. Bush dumped a huge amount of our treasury on the banks - with no apparent effect and no apparent accountability.mescalero1 wrote:O.S.A.K.

All will be well in the land when cooler heads prevail.
Our national debt/leveraged responsibility is now over $250K per capita = for every man woman and child. How are we going to pay that off?
Nothing in place to bail out social security or medicare or medicaid - and our new POTUS will most likely extend the 20 million plus illegal population an invitation to become citizens and partake of what's left of these programs.
The current spending by the government will most certainly spur inflation.
The rest of the world is experiencing the same problems...
I hate to sound all "death dying and despair" but it is what it is. We are heading for a macro depression.
I am trying to keep a positive outlook on my life and perform at the highest level that I can for my company and prepare financially the best I can for my family.
The way I look at it, it can't hurt to decrease debt, increase spending and work hard - regardless of what happens
On a more positive note - I have not seen the increasing unemployment in our area and the malls and shops around the area are quite busy with shoppers.... which is good - if people refuse to act like things are going down the tubes, that will help slow the fall...

Re: OT---We Are Not The First
The best quote I've heard about this is something like "the lesson of history is that we never learn anything from history."we never learn from history, just doomed to repeat the mistakes
Thanks for that link to the quotation verifier. I can see it being useful.

Re: OT---We Are Not The First
"Those lunatics on the left" are the ones who killed the space program's ambitions. They whined about how the Apollo program cost $70 billion up to 1970, and how we should "spend the money and fix the problems here on Earth first". Yeah, the Apollo program cost $70 billion over about 6 years. But the government threw away $70 billion on welfare programs in 1970 alone, and those lunatics won't tell you that. Those lunatics don't have the vision to go outward. Sorry for the political-ness...jd45 wrote:We need to set up shop on Mars & start over. A man's admiration for absolute government is proportionate to the contempt he feels for those around him.
