OT-Firing pins

Post by Borregos »

My recent problems with a broken firing pin in my pre 64 Winchester 94 got me to thinking that I must have a firing pin problem :!: :!: :!:

I have had broken firing pins in the following firearms:

Winchester 94 in 30-30
Marlin 1889 in 44-40 (was broken when I bought it)
Freedom Arms in 44Mag (sent it back to FA and they replaced it with a removable one)
Freedom Arms in 22LR (got one from FA and put it in myself)

I SHOULD POINT OUT THAT I NEVER DRY FIRE ANY OF MY FIREARMS :!: :!: :!:

I guess I'm just unlucky as far as firing pins go :( :( :(

Borregos,

In my entire shooting life I remember two broken firing pins, and one missing one.

The first was in my 1906 vintage Win 1894SRC. The firing pin tip had broken off and someone had faced off the pins body, drilled it, then stuck a nail in the hole. It pierced every primer it fired. It was like that when I got it. Once I replaced it everything worked just fine.

The next one was a H&R single shot .22 rifle. When I got it the firing pin was missing. That got replaced, and no problems later.

The last one was in my Interarms Virginian Dragoon SA .45 Colt. I dry fired that one a little bit and one day the FP broke on me when I was shooting. I sent it back to the factory and never dry fired it again.

I don't dry fire my guns any more for practice. Occasionally to test the function yes, for practice no.

Strangely enough other than the firing pin on the Dragoon I've never broken a firing pin. I used to dry fire my S&Ws with their hammer mounted pins all the time, never broke one. Others have though.
So I really don't know what to say. It can happen, especially with a gun you buy used. You really never know what the previous owners have done with them.

Knock on wood..never broke any firing pins on anything.

I have a mag release catch on a 1911 pattern pistol that wont move.... still trying to figure out how to get that out without a drill press........

always press the "red" button--- it's worth the effort and the results can be fun

Borregos, sorry Sir if in the other post I implied you dry fired. It may of sounded assuming for which I appologise :D
It happens I guess, breaking pins that is.
The worst I had happen was on a 22 when I pinged the pin on an empty chamber and mashed the pin some. The next time out resulted in alot of misfires. I was scratching my head for a while untill I remembered what had happened and took a closer look!

Nath, no need to apologise I started this post well before you posted on the other thread so there was no implication as far as I'm concerned as I only just read it :!: :D :D :D
