OT - New Skinning knives arrived

Post by bsaride »

I ordered these knives back in early October from Bear Paw Knives of Havre, MT. I found Phil's website when I was just browsing and liked the shape of his skinners. I contacted him and asked if he could make me a pair using my supplied wood and no sheaths. I will be sending these to SimplyRugged.com to make sheaths matching the holster, belt and cartridge slides I got from him earlier this year. The wood is a piece I bought a few years ago that had already been aged 10 years, it's Amboyna burl.

Anyhow, I wanted to show them off and will get more pics with leather in a couple months.

Sometimes I wonder if it is worthwhile gnawing through the leather straps to get up in the morning..................

That is some really fine looking wood. Where does it come from?

Quick search and it's from Southeast Asia, cambodia being listed. I think I found it on ebay,
a piece 1 x 6 x 10 for about $60 3-5 years ago.

You never mentioned their cost, any reason? Or posted a link to the manufacturer.

I'm excited about the knives and just forgot, OK?

I paid $85 for the pair and supplied the Amboyna with the stipulation that he keep the balance of the material and not supply sheaths. I think this is a great deal as he gets $125 each for either knife with sheath. The blade material he uses is D2. The quality of the knives is not perfect (some sanding lines in the scales and blade handle) but a very good set of working knives that feel good in the hand. It may be that he rushed these somewhat with the holiday schedule, but I'm am very happy with them.
