Old Winchester Powder Question

Post by Bruce »

I picked up some Winchester 296 powder today for reloading some .44 mag loads for my Marlin 1894. My question concerns the age of the powder or an attempt to age it. It came in the metal can - not the newer plastic cans. It had not been opened until I got it and as best as I can tell by smelling it, it is still good. Anyone have any knowledge on how to date it. I have the Lot # etc..

Bruce,

From what I remember, Winchester went to the plastic bottles about 10 years ago.
I have several of the old cans with 748 and 760 in them from back then. It smells good and is still giving good service.
Since yours was still sealed and smells right, I'd use it without worry.
