Stock from scratch-Pt 2

Post by marlinman93 »

Here's the next step in my project to build a set of stocks for the double rifle from scratch.
I fitted pieces of wood to the action and forearm in last post, and have them close. I installed the cheekpiece and donor stock to the inletted fir pieces.

Next I bondo the wood to the action and bondo the cheekpiece into the stock.

After drying I rough shape the bondo with a coarse rasp, and later I'll do final filling and sand to a close finish.
Image

It doesn't need to be perfect for a pattern, but the closer the better, as that saves woodwprk later!
Image

The forearm is next to get a few more pieces of wood, and then final shaping with bondo and a rough rasping. Here it's fitted to the receiver, and will be shaped the rest of the way when the fit is perfect.

The next steps will have to wait until after the Christmas break!-Vall

Looking good Val :)
I am really enjoying this series of yours learning lots. I will have to save it for when I get the bug to do this myself.

This is quite an education. I think this project is another tribute to your skills in restoring (in this case, I guess, building)
a fine firearm. Looking forward to the rest of the work.

When I left for Chirstmas I was ready to do the final fill and shaping on the forearm. Here is the forearm pattern today:

I once again covered the barrels with plastic wrap and mixed up another batch of bondo. The skelton was already semi fitted to the receiver and barrels, so now I need to apply enough bondo to allow me to work it back down to my final shape:
Image

When the bondo sets up, the forearm is removed and stripped of the plastic wrap. Then it's rough shaped and repeatedly trial fitted to the barrels to see if it fits properly on both sides. After a rough shaping it is sanded and ready for the duplicator:

Hopefully I'll get to the final sanding of the buttstock, and then both pieces will be duplicated and the final wood can then be fitted to the gun and finished!-Vall

Marlinman,
What kind of duplicator do you have?
I have a roto-carve.

I don't own a duplicator. I send my patterns out to have the stocks duplicated.
