I just put a 1953 Win 94 on layaway...

Post by O.S.O.K. »

I am a sick puppy :) I just can't help myself when a "the right" firearm presents itself.

I was at the local funshop - bringing the owner a rifle that I'd worked on back to him and there it was on the rack.

It was all over when I looked at the bore - pristine. The outside is well worn but not abused. The serial number is 1920XXX.

Its kinda dirty but that's to be expected - and is easy enough to remidy! Caliber is 30-30.

It just feels really cool in my hands.

Now I have to ge figure out what I'm going to sell to pay for it ;) I'm really trying to not to spend more money on guns...

I'll post picks and of course the obligatory range report after I get it home.

Sounds like a nice one congrats. I'm the same way, those Winchester are hard to turn down.

Yes, those pre-64 model 94s are hard to walk by, at a gunshow, for me. And when I see one on the used gunrack at any local gunshop, I always have to ask to see it.

I wish I had purchased my first one a lot sooner then I did. It's funny, but many years ago, they were about the same price as they are now. And $400 was a lot of money years ago. Finally I purchased my first for about $350 and I still have it. Anyway once you own one, it's hard to like the post 64's nearly as much, I own a few post 64s but they just don't have the same feel to them as a nice pre-64.

Well, I'm probably paying too much for it - but that minty looking bore really got me. And the action is tight. Looks like it was carried a lot and shot very little - and the owner knew to keep the bore oiled. I think this is a consignment gun because the gunshop owner is a friend and usually offers to take a little off - I do a lot of stuff for him for free or for very little - like I just conveted his Saiga .223 to pistol grip configuration and handled all of the reasembly too - including the bolt hold open which is a booger to reinstall - unless you know the tricks ;)

Anyway, I've noticed the the winchester market seems to have softened - probably just temporarily - people seem to be focused on the battle rifles at the moment. But in time, that'll change.
