Help to identify .348 Ammo

Post by B-lever »

Image

The top one is current 200 gr Winnie factory ammo. I'd guess that the left one is 220 or 250 gr. The right one has me completely stumped. All the unknown ammo calipers as if it's factory made.

Thanks

Top: 200 gr. Silvertip (available new only in periodic special production runs from Winchester)
Left: 250 gr. Silvertip (hasn't been made since the '60s yellow/red lettered box)
Right: probably 150 gr by Winchester/Western (hasn't been made for a long time and generally wasn't very accurate in the Winchester Model 71)

B-lever,
Does the cartridge on the right have a PETERS headstamp? I have only seen that bullet profile with the groove forward on the ogive in PETERS cartridges. As to the bullet weight, if you have a reloading scale, weigh the cartridge and compare the weight to a known cartridge. That should get you close.

I saw some Remington made .348's not long ago at a gun store, real old looking box. Didn't look close enough to remember the grain or remember the looks of the bullet itself. Never had seen any Remingtons before.

The bottom left and right head stamps are "Super Speed .348 Win"

The one on the left is definitely a 250 Silvertip. The bottom right looks like a reload with a Speer bullet. They used to make them in 180 and 220 grain. The peters and later Remington ammo was more of a round nose. If it is a Win Super Speed case, it's a good bet that it is a reload. Considering your location, it is possible that Dominion loaded some 348s but it would have been odd to use Win stamped brass instead of their own.
