Calling Mike D. On 1894 In 32-40

Post by Sixgun »

Or anyone else that likes old Winchesters :D

Mike,
Your post the other day got me thinking and with me being half Italian, that ain't easy!

One rifle I have never checked was this near new 1894 in 32-40 that was made in 1921. I just hate turning screws that have never been turned before but...........my Italian brain started working OT on this rainy day so I pulled her apart and low and behold--there's that MNS marking. The visible parts of the barrel show no such "nickel steel" markings. Thanks! I'm gonna shove some real loads down that barrel now! (maybe :D )

Image,

why this pic looks brown, I don't know. (notice the correct proof marks but no "nickel steel" marking?)

Ed,
No, thats a sight blank (one of the fancy ones) Lyman and Marbles used to make them and the one on that rifle is an original, but I also make them myself from old sights that are not collectable. Here's a pic I took a while ago.------------------Sixgun

Well, I'll be, Sixgun. I knew that there are plenty of 'em out there, but evidently noone has bothered to look. I haven't tried any real "smoker" .32-40 loads, but will one of these days. The limits are the cases, but 2000 FPS should be an easy mark. I have seen both .32-40 and .38-55 bbls with top marked NS, but most are not. :D

Thanks Sixgun. Some time ago I read that some guys DO turn the rear sight around. Seems it puts the sight out just that little bit further from the eye and it helps guys with not so great eyes focus better on their sights.

Keep us informed about your loads for ths rifle.

Weird, but the photos won't show up for me. All I have is "image" wording. :(
