Ballistics by the inch
In my wanderings I found this.

Nothing real surprising to me but I thought it would be of interest if you're wondering about pistol calibers in longer barrels. As expected the magnum revolver rounds showed the most improvement for longer barrels.

Nothing earth shattering in their data but very interesting none the less. What I found most interesting was that the "trapper" length barrels (16") posted approximately the same or even higher velocities than the 18" barrels, at least in my favorite calipers; 357 and 44mag. Thinking about all those chopped up barrels kind of made me sick, though.

the two inches of barrel from 2" to 4" seem to be the most important. Good to know.

www.norma.cc has a good ballistic program, which can be used with american units instead of unpractical metrics.
