Insurance on Gun Collection

I wanted to see if any of you have any experience with these guys. I have a friend that has a nice collection of old Colts, Winchesters and Civil War rifles. Seems cheaper than putting it on the homeowners policy. He has a safe, but likes to display his guns also. Any thoughts appreciated.

I have mine insured by the NRA - its affiliate insurance company. My insurance company (state farm) doesn't allow more than $1500 or something rediculous like that on guns - and this is common policy for most all insurance companies.

The best deal going that I'm aware of is USAA - for vets. They do insure your collection and at its value.

I have State Farm as well. But, I haven't run into any limit problems. I just got a "rider" on my homeowners policy. They're more than happy to take my money.

Likewise... and it's a "replacement value" rider, collected on it twice.. they squawked something fierce the 2nd time, but ultimately coughed up new guns. A couple of the lost ones were true, original one-of-a-kind presentation guns, and while the replacements are maybe not as nice, my wife sez I'm nuts.

I had my guns insured with Carpenter Insurance. Supposedly some connection with the NRA. When my contract was up they had discontinued the double rate which was quite reasonable. One for collecter guns, and the other for normal hunting and shooting (non collector) types. The new premiums were a lot higher so I did not renew. I'm a bit uncomfortable about it though. As I am on a fixed income I had to make a choice. I have a safe and live in a different area that is somewhat more secure (for fire and theft) than before.

When I checked with my homeowners ins. guy the price was ridiculous to add the actual replacement value on a rider. Like marlinman, I put my money in a good safe, an alarm, and two little noisy four legged alarms.

I have used Sportsmans Insurance Agency in Florida for 20 yrs. The owner, Hollis Boss, is a shooter and collector. You can taylor a policy for replacement value, appraised value or current book value. There is also a policy for collectors that insures the whole collection for one price instead of each piece individually. Additionally, you can insure such things as scopes, mounts, custom trigger jobs, travel cases, slings and any other accessories or modifications on your gun. I had one experience where a JDJ handgun, scope, etc in a hard case "disappeared" from a foreign airline on return to the US. They took my claim over the phone and I had a check in my hand on the 15th day after the claim was made.

+1 The insurance premium on a good policy will buy a very good safe in a couple/few years (depending on one's collection)

Some years back before State Farm changed things , they paid off on what I asked for on not only my guns , but all the other missing things and the other damage.. Now is different . Bought the safe after the mules got loose. ......Mutt
