Salvageable cases.?

Post by deerwhacker444 »

I've got a handfull of shells that were given to me that look like this. Can I pull the bullets and salvage this brass or is it too far gone? The green gunk seems to wipe off without any problems. I just don't know if the case structure has been weakened or not.

And yes, I am a cheap bastard..!

Wipe them off with mineral spirits or WD-40 and shoot them. I had so old 06's that were that way, I disposed of them the right way, out the barrel.

I wouldn't use any chemicals unless you're heading right out to shoot them. WD$) or mineral spirits can get into the case and cause problems, unless you shoot them soon after.
I use plain old steel wool to clean them and then shoot them up, or store them for later.

That kind of looks like verdigris. The crappy corrosion that forms when brass is left in leather cartridge loops for too long. I've never seen it eat through a case. I'd wipe them down with a coarse rag or steel wool and shoot 'em.
Then I'd wash them in a diluted mix of white vinegar and water. Inspect, tumble, and use again.

Fine steel wool, wipe clean and shoot.

I go along with the steel wool guys. No to the WD40 unless they will be fired right away and then make sure they are dry when fired. A lubed case gives too much set back and is hard on the gun. :D

Joe - exactly what I was thinking. I've seen that with cartridges left in loops too long. The cases clean up fine! :D
