Update--Range report---Marlin with muzzle wear

Post by Thunder50 »

Took the Marlin to the range today. Not too bad--31 degrees and cloudy w/4" snow at the range----but NO wind (ususual for there)!!

Started out shooting into the 100yd berm to see where it was hitting, as I just put a scope on it. About 3 ft right and 8" low. Few more shots got me close, so went to the gongs that I just painted. Few more shots had it hitting about 2" high, so went to the paper target.

Started shooting the 200gr Remington bullets at the center of the target. Shot 4, then pulled out some 180gr Speer FP and shot one at the gong first. Hit about 2" lower than the Remingtons, so just at POI. Shot 4 more (only had 5) and decent group at low center of the target, but THINK I might have jerked one.

Next went to the Leverevolution and took a shot at the other gong. It hit about 2" low and 1" right from the Speer bullets. Adjusted the scope, shot again, adjusted a little higher and shot once more at the gong. Looked good, so went to paper. Aimed at the top left of the target. Had a bit steadier rest. First shot was about 3.5" high and then the next 4 made a nice tight group, about 7/8". Not sure of the first shot, could have been me. Moved the scope a little right after the first shot

Single hole in the bottom right was after I raised the scope up a bit more and took a shot to comfirm how high it was hitting. Should be good for 200yds with the Hornady ammunition.

Glad I listened to everybody as the bit of missing rifleing didn't seem to hurt it much, unless maybe that first shot with the Hornady ammo was caused by it. Still shot ALOT better than I expected. Saved me some work.

Yeah, I'd say that gun is shootin' pretty well for an initial outting with a recently attached scope.

Looks like it shoots minute of elk. Doesnt look like you need to worry any more about the rifling.

I'd say its shooting great! Amazing how that affects the accuracy so little...

I have always seen about a 100% improvement (4" down to 2") with old milsurp rifles with dinged up crowns that I've chamfer cut. That's different than this rifle though.

Hmmm, still sounds kind of suspicous too me. Better to be on the safe side and just pack it up and send it to me. I don't mide having something as finicky as that ol' rifle. :D

Looks like you have something that's gonna work out pretty good there. 8)

Twas as I suspected. Worn out rifling just forward of the chamber can be a bad deal, but worn out rifling near the muzzle does not seem to have much effect. Your groups are excellent ..... ain't nothing wrong with that rifle.
