OT – Non-lever range report (an “EBR-Jr.”)

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Well, as promised in my previous “on-lever” range report on the “EBP” (“Evil Black Pistol” – a Glock G27), here is part two of that shooting session.

As luck would have it, I had just spent the remainder of my “gun funds” on a purchase from our own rjohns94 a couple weeks ago. I bought his GSG-5 rifle (carbine) that he had put for sale here on the forum. It was a funny twist of fate. My son (“Ysabel Kid’s Kid” here) and I had finished up a shooting session and decided to browse the offerings in the gun store portion of the range we went to – never hard to convince Y2K to do that (he IS a chip off my block!). We got down to the part of the counter where the “EBR’s” were kept (“Evil Black Rifle”), and he spied what he thought was an H&K MP-5. After having had a chance to shoot two of these (an MP-5 and an MP-5K) last year, he fell in love with this little sub-machine gun. It turned out that it wasn’t an MP-5 at all, but the .22 Long Rifle version called a GSG-5. We fondled it lovingly, but at $499, I just didn’t want to spend the money that day.

I remembered seeing a post by rjohns94 that had included a picture of one of these, so wrote him a PM through the forum inquiring about it, just to see what he thought of the gun itself. He responded immediately, noting that he had just put it up for sale that day in the “classified” section here. I jumped on it, knowing that it was a good deal, and the funds would be used for his Ethiopian mission trip. Talk about your “win-win” situations! :D

Well, the gun arrived Tuesday before Thanksgiving. In between that time my wife had heard of the tax-free firearm’s holiday in South Carolina and convinced me to go out and get something. Who was I to resist? I probably should have mentioned the new (to me) gun coming in, but why look a gift horse in the mouth? I figure it is always better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, and it is not often I spend money from the “general fund” on firearms.

I had asked Mike what the GSG-5 liked to digest and he replied “CCI Mini-Mags”. Well, despite what you all may think after my great week last week, I’m not made of money, so I decided to test this out first on less-expensive fodder – some high-velocity Winchester “wildcats” and some Remington “Golden Bullets”. Both are the “bulk buy” inexpensive plinking ammo – fun to shoot a lot of, and easy on the wallet. Not the most accurate, nor the most reliable, but safe, cheap and fun.

I was rewarded with accuracy I didn’t expect given the rounds I was shooting. Good thing too, because this gun was made to shoot a lot of cartridges and shoot them fast. What a hoot! Again, shooting as fast as I could without getting myself in trouble on the range, I was amazed at how fast I’d empty a magazine (holding 25 rounds), all on target, and without a single malfunction of any kind. This is a keeper. :D :D :D

Only problem was that Y2K had a fit when he found out I shot it without him. I’ll never hear the end of this until I take him out with it as well!

Again, I’ve made you all wait long enough. Here are a couple photos of the new “EBR-JR”.

KirkD I am not, that is for sure. But these pictures should wet your appetite!

I’ll try to get a lever out here before the end of the year or you guys will excommunicate me!

Looks like that would be fun rolling cans around. Is that a red dot type sight?

It looks like a gun that was well made. I like it's style/shape too; very nice. Y2K should really enjoy that! :D

Yes it is. Mike included it with the gun. Almost makes rolling cans cheating, but I can live with myself doing so!

Make by the guy who designed the original MP-5 for H&K. It has the same heft and feel - which means the .22 LR round barely feels like it is going off at all (not that it is a wild recoiling round to begin with! ). Y2K is going to drive me nuts on this one, for sure!

I think there is alittle EBR in all of us. Get some more mags if you can before Jan.20. I too have been looking at these, and they are very hard to find. Seems they went up to 600 around here. I think the pistol would be pretty cool. Congrats and time to start working those finger muscles.

+1 on the 'extra mags' thing - I have a dandy .22LR Calico that has a 100-shot magazine, but only ONE magazine (granted, that's lots of rounds, but if it BREAKS the gun is a very awkward 'single shot' from that point on - thanks to our wonderful tyrocrats...)

Glad you enjoyed the rifle. I wish you many years of enjoying borrowing it from YKK. For those others, your suggestions on extra mags were well taken, I sold the rifle to YK with three mags, the red dot sight and the tactical sling all below MSRP for the rifle alone. The funds are going to the Ethiopia missions trip. Thanks YK!!!

The kid with an EBR! :D I've heard a lot of good on those guns that you just snagged. Sellin' like hotcakes around here in Pa.

Here's an EBR-- H&K MP-5 full auto I was shooting last week. The guy in the pic is my buddy Tom who has a class 3 license. Before we left, he asked me, "What kind of a machine gun you wanna shoot?" I said, "a Ma Duece". He says, "they take too long to clean, I'll bring an MP-5 in 9mm and a couple of cases of ammo.----Lots of fun, especially when its someone elses ammo.-----------Sixgun

YK,
After reading how much fun you had with it, I read several write-ups on it and it seems everyone has positive things to say about it. Sooo, I ordered one for my older son, then couldn't resist and ordered another for me. Had to do something with all the .22 I have laying about. And yes, they are California legal, (for now).

We had one in the store, for two days! The buyer came back two days later looking for more ammo!! And again two days after that!!!!

If you do this I think it makes your rifle a SBR. Check into it before you do that shorty stock.

Nope, as long as the bbl is 16" (which it is with the permanently attached muzzle device from the factory) and overall length is 26" per Federal regs. Now most states follow the Federal regs which measure with the stock closed IIRC but there may be one or two that deviate.

Putting a stock on the GSG5PK WILL make it an SBR.

Exactly. The FFL I used in the transfer freaked out when he saw it without the stock on (for shipping), thinking it was a SBR. I explained that it was not and why.

I stopped by a place that sells adult airsoft supplies here in town, but no luck on accessories for an MP-5. Will need to do some digging to find what I need...
