So here's my hair brain plan...

Post by marlinman93 »

I was at my gunsmith friend's the other day, and while we were digging around for parts up pops this old SxS Spanish .20 ga. shotgun. No wood, not much finish, but some very nice engraving. I set it aside, but couldn't help picking it back up and asking what his plans were for it.
After a bit of discussion, we began toying with different ideas, and an old (very old!) idea of mine arose. I've always wanted a drilling or double rifle, and even more, one in a fun caliber, instead of the typical boomer that shakes your eyeballs loose! So, here's what I proposed to my friend, after I talked him out of the shotgun. We're going to pull the tubes and turn down two .311" barrels and use them as liners for the old SxS.
My friend has built some of these for himself and others, and has figured out how to regulate them to hit point of aim at 50 or 100 yds., so we're going to make it a .32-20 SxS double rifle, and set it up for 100 yd. plinking, or small "safari" hunting! The process requires that the 28" barrels will be about 2" shorter when it's relined and regulated, but that's just about the length I want in a double rifle. It will be fairly muzzle heavy, but should hold really well, and even better from cross sticks.
So that's the hair brained plan. Nuts or what? :D

Why not make it a 32-40?

Vall, that sounds like the kind of hair brained plan that will make an absolutly wonderful shooting rifle in my most favorite caliber 32wcf. If you can, post some progress reports and photos as you go.

Vall.
Sounds great,but.........like you said,I think it would be too heavy with the .311 groove diameter. Now, if you made it .427-.429 and stuck a 44-40 chambering reamer down the breech end.................you could call it your "little big bore".---------Sixgun

You read my mind. The 32-40 just looks right like a mini old-world double rifle cartridge.

I like the .32-40, but I LOVE the .32-20, and there's plenty of double rifles in similar calibers to .32-40 already. I'd like something that defies the norm, and in my favorite pistol/rifle caliber, so I'm sticking with the .32-20 on this project. Yep, it will be too heavy, but it's for fun, not packing all day. :D
I've got a gorgeous piece of presentation grade walnut, and if the gun turns out well enough to merit it, then it will go towards stocks for this one!-Vall

Sounds like the ultimate woodchuck gun to me!
And a killer idea.

the .32-20 has been my favorite cartridge since I got my first
92 whle I was in college. Spent every last penny I had at the time and
have never regretted it.

Can't wait to see your new project completed.

Vall, I think it's a great plan. Just the thing to back up your clients on porcupine hunts. I'm really taken with the idea of two virtually simultaneous shots from a 32-20. Should drop a charging porcupine - even a wounded one - in its tracks!

Seriously, it sounds like a fun project, and having some idea of the work you've done in the past I'm sure this double rifle will
be a real classy firearm.

I've always wanted an affordable double also. I'm sure If you don't like it when it's done, someone around here would be more than willing to give you .10 on the dollar to get rid of it. :D

Vall - You might want to read the bible on the conversion: BUILDING DOUBLE RIFLES ON DOUBLE SHOTGUN ACTIONS by W.Ellis Brown.

Here's a video, of a shotgun being converted into a .405 double rifle:

I always thought that those chamber/barrel 'adapters' for 12 gauge would make a nice 'double rifle' cheaply.

What about one .32-20 barrel, and the other in .32-40, or 7.62x39 (same diameter bullet, different chambering), or .45-70  for that matter?

The problem with two different calibers is POI. Can't use one set of sights for two different calibers that hit at different POI.
My friend has built quite a few double guns from SxS shotguns, and he pretty much talked me out of two different calibers with ease, once he explained the problems incurred. We shot his double gun in .30-40 Krag SxS while I was there, and it will print 1.5" groups using both barrels at 100 yds. Pretty cool!

Vall, would it be at all possible to get a look at one of your friend's converted doubles? Just to give everyone a hint of what your project will look like?

Val, this sounds like a wonderful project. However, it is just SCREAMING for "before, during, and after" photos. Be sure to take them - because you know we all want to see them!!! :D

Good luck and keep us posted!!!

This sounds like another post that could keep the winter blues at bay!

Not sure I can get all the before, during, after pictures, as we live about 2 hrs. away from each other, and it's not strtegiacally easy to do. I will take before pics, and I know I'll be there for one during, and then when it's done. Not sure I will see it enough to get a lot during. Since I may end up carving the stocks from a blank, I might get a number of during shots of the stock work.-Vall

Vall,
Is John T involved in this? This sounds like it an "epic journey" similar to Jim D's case hardening saga. Looking forward to it.

Only two caliber that would work would be leaving one side as shotgun..

No, John is not involved. Another friend is doing this one with me. Here's a couple pictures of the action. Nothing pretty to start with, just a basic boxlock with a little border engraving:

I'm jealous. I've read the book cover to cover several times, and being a machinist, i know I could handle the work. But, I've never come across a strong enough action that I could afford to mess with. Yours looks like it will be perfect with that cross bolt, and just the right amount of engraving.

Thanks Guncase. We both looked this one over pretty closely, and decided it was a good candidate for the project for the same reasons you mentioned. The crossbolt system it has seemed better than a few others we looked at.-Vall
