I've noticed that Uberti 24" 1873 rifles have a tapered barrel as well as Taylor's Italian made model 1892.

Can anyone tell me if the 24" Rossi (EMF) model 1892s have a tapered barrel?

Both the EMF imported Hartford's and the Legacy Sports imported Puma's with octagon barrels are made by Rossi and have straight octagon, not tapered barrels. The 24" 357m feels like a truck axle but the leveraction silhouette shooters like it.

I just joined up.

I always thought lever guns were nostalgic but the only one I had shot before was a Marlin 39A .22 my dad had.

I have a Rossi 92 in 45 colt with the 24" octagon barrel. I've stripped the receiver down and taken the screws out of the fore end tip, but I am not sure on how to remove the forearm. I try sliding it forward but the block the fore end tip screws into is in the way. I've not wanted to force anything but I would like to remove the fore end to refinish. The stainless is too shiny to suit my tastes while hunting.

The 24" octagon barrel does seem heavy but I like the way it dampens my natural movement while aiming.

Welcome to the fire. Ok, here is what you need to do. Take the mag plug, spring and follower out of the mag tube. Next you will need to support the barrel and mag hanger in a padded vise with the left side up so you can drift the pin out of the hanger. It sounds like you have the forend cap loose so the next step is to grease the mag tube just behind the hanger. The grease helps prevent scratching the tube in the next step.
Now clamp just the tube in the vise and gently wiggle the gun off the tube but just enough so the forend wood can be removed.

I was talking to a retiree friend of mine who first got me interested in the 45 Colt. He suggested the same. Now I just need to figure out what kind of finish to put on the stainless parts. Any suggestions?

Radio Shack sells a kit for making printed circuit boards. The etchant that comes in the kit will turn stainless steels (at least, some alloys) a dull gray. If you can find a copy of "Handguns '99", Ray Ordorica has an article on a concealed carry Officer's Colt he used it on. I used it on a Ruger Bisley Vaquero. It's not as permanently gray as I would like, but it will take down the shine.

I do have access to a bead blaster though not at work since we can no longer have any gun parts on site. I've thought about bead blasting to dull the shine like my Encore. I've also looked at the different spray on finishes Brownell's sells either out of an spray can or air brush. Any pros or cons on these?

Bead Blasted Stainless is the way to go. There are at least 2, maybe more of us here who have Rossi's tuned & BB by Nate.

I note you live east of Chi town. I live about 2 mi east of US 41 in Gibson county in Indiana.

Do you hunt with your 92 or just cowboy shoot with it? Yours is not nearly as shiny as mine. Does it have the round 24" barrel?

I hunt with it. Not much into the games.

I've taken 3 deer on Dunes State Park with it in the last 2 years.

It is a stainless 20" round barrel that has been Bead Blasted to kill the shine.

What type of bead blasting medium do you use. I FINALLY got my 44 back and I want to blast it. Plus it gives me the excuse to by some blasting equipment.

That tang sight looks great on that bead blasted rifle; a lot better than that Williams (?) on the carbine. I wonder if the tang sight could be electroless nickle plated to look like the bead blasted stainless . . .

Did you think the tang mounted sight was in the way? I think they look nicer than the receiver mounted. I'm still using the original sights but may go to a receiver sight in the future since these 48 year old peeps don't see 20/15 any more. I can't see putting a scope on it either although I do use one on my Encore muzzleloader.

I have a tang sight on my 1886 and the reciever on my 1892. The Tang sight is most certainly in the way/makes me change my preferred grip.

Unfortunate, as it really does look better and gives you a longer sight plane.

Oh, I have no doubt the reciever sight is the more accurate sight. I was just referring the "period" look . . . but there was not much bead blasted stainless steel found on the originals-- so I guess my point is moot.

In my youth when I used hang around and work in the E.Chicago/Hammond/Gary area, I used to keep a short shotgun under the seat of my car (you know, one that would make a Snake Charmer look like a long gun)-- never fired it, but did have to get it out once. This was when daddy Daley was around.
