Wounded deer attacks hunter who shot him
SEDALIA, Mo. — A Sedalia hunter bagged a big buck on the second day of firearms season, but the kill caused him a lot of pain.
Forty-nine-year-old Randy Goodman said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck on Nov. 19. Goodman said the deer looked dead to him, but seconds later the nine-point, 240-pound animal came to life.
The buck rose up, knocked Goodman down and attacked him with his antlers in what the veteran hunter called "15 seconds of hell." The deer ran a short distance and went down, and died after Goodman fired two more shots.
Soon Goodman started feeling dizzy and noticed his vest was soaked in blood.
So he reached his truck and drove to a hospital, where he received seven staples in his scalp and was treated for a slight concussion and bruises.

A misprint. It was supposed to read "two, well ..... 'placed'.... shots"

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
Thats why I will no longer hunt with anything less then a 300 Win. If 2 "Well placed" shots from a 270 can't get it done then my poor little 30-30 shooting cast bullets are just going to bounce right off.
Maybe this little butt whoopin will encourage him to spend a little more time at the range.
I can just imagine what the talk at the round table in the local diner will sound like.

Actually where this poor guy went wrong was with his choice of caliber. Now if he had a 30/30 it would of been perfect!
I had a large stag red come for me once (mainley because my jacket was covered in deer pee) but the Marlin in the neck at 15yds stopped him and he would of had the rest off the hip if needed and no twiddly bolt slowing up procedures!
270 is a wonderfull round, a friend uses one. Heck you've seen him in pictures on here. I have the utmost respect for it but I am always surprised by how many deer leg it after being shot. How some folk talk it should turn them inside out right there.
I guess it's the same old story, it don't matter how little power ye has if ye puts it in the zone and equally it don't matter how much ye has if it is outside the zone!
Hope he fixe's up ok.

I think where the guy went wrong was admitting to the news media that any of this happened, that and he wasn't using Nath's pellet rifle

Who says deer aren't dangerous game animals?
And I'd be curious as to what load this nimrod was employing. "I tried some of them 100 grain high velocity loads that my buddies say kill like lightening"

There's numerous stories of guys thinking their prey is dead and straddle it to grab the antlers. They end up participating in a "Forest Rodeo".

Thinking about it I remember reading an article from a 60's guns n' ammo by Elmer. IIRC he approached a bull elk on a mountainside he had shot only to have the thing through its head and skittle Elmer half way down the mountain or something in that order.

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
Some deer are just plain tough, so it's always good to approach with caution, and check the deer carefully before proceeding. My son in law's first buck was one of those tough deer. He dropped it with one "well placed shot" right through the lungs at 325 yds. After some celebarting we walked up, and I told him to poke the deer with his muzzle. At that point the buck attempted to get up, and we all backed away quickly! I had my .45 Colt on my hip, so I finished him off (I thought!) with a shot to the head. I holstered the gun, and again we poked him with the muzzle of the rifle, only to see him begin to flail about! Again we retreated, and another shot from the .45 was given to the neck this time.
We poked him again, and he finally stayed still. We carefully field dressed him, but I still wondered as we dressed him if he might not have one more try in him!
One tough mule deer!

OT - Wounded Deer Attacks... (Oops, repost!)
"After 2 well placed shots from a .270..."
Guess I'm going to have to change my definition of "well placed"...

Wounded Deer Attacks Hunter Who Shot Him
Randy Goodman, 47, of Sedalia, is seen with the buck that injured him Nov. 16. Goodman shot the deer twice,
but it did not go gently into the night. The buck attacked Goodman, cutting his head, before he finally finished the job.

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
Now, gentlemen, don't be too hard on the hunter. Reporters often use sloppy English. The hunter might instead have said he thought he had two well placed shots....said he thought two well-placed shots with his .270-caliber rifle had killed the buck
Alternately, he might indeed have had two well placed shots--with poorly constructed bullets.

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
In the past several years I've heard reports from folks I have known about deer that "come to life" after being loaded in the back of a pick up, one had a shell topper, and another about the same thing happened in an old station wagon car.
Both incidents in the truck the deer was "unconscience" for over 30 minutes before resurecting. The incident in the car the deer revived when they were unloading it about 45 minutes later.
All 3 of the reports were from young hunters or in 1 case happened while the hunter was young.
I know of another man who was impaled by an elk antler through the calf of his right leg.
Guess it pays to make sure , cutting the throat is a cheap insurance policy.

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
This story reminds me of the funniest bear hunting trip I have ever seen. I used to live in a small town in the Gila Forest here in NM and bears were thick one year. A local guide, which is very knowledgeable when it comes to bears, was using dogs and treed this large black bear. The hunter shot it with a .22(I think to claim that he has killed everything with a .22). They brought it back in a Toyota pickup and called the newspaper to take pictures. I was across the street at the time so I know this happened. The hunter was posing with his trophy while sitting on the tailgate when the thing came back to life. It grabbed his rear and wouldn't let go, just shaking him like a rag doll. The guide and another hunter unloaded on the wounded bear while still in the back of the pickup until it finally let go. When it was all over, that pickup looked as though it had been through a fire-fight. Everybody was laughing so hard at the time (except for the guy who needed stitches to close his rear.)
I know things like that can and do happen and that is why I shouldn't laugh

Re: Wounded deer attacks hunter
I have heard stories of people getting impailed by antlers on sambar deer down here. This is why I wait a few minutes after it looks dead, then poke it in the eye with the muzzle of my rifle. Better to be safe rather then sorry

This is just a little off from a deer attract.
Two good old boys here in Johnson County hit a deer while they were driving around drinking and or doping. The flung the deer in their truck and drove into a small town where they parked the truck and walked to another good old boy's house and shot his pit bull. They also shot his car and house. They returned to their truck and left.
The good old boy who had his place shot up called the sheriff. While that crime was being investigated a call came in that a drive by shooting had just occurred north of town.
The sheriff's men left the first crime Sean and went to answer the drive by shooting. The two good old boys with the deer in the back of their truck were the victims of the drive by shooting.
After about two minutes of investigation it was discovered that the two good old boys had stopped out side of town to drink, dope, or take a leak and noticed that the deer in the back of the truck was moving. One good old boy pulls out his pistol and shoots that deer a couple of times as it lay in the back of the truck.
One of his shots came off the truck bed and hit his buddy in the head. Non lethal wound.
Good investigating by the sheriff's department solved all crimes in just a short time.

you know, it doesn't seem like it should be called an "attack" since the hunter approached the buck after the shot. The deer did run away, just the hunter was in the path.
