OT - Range report (non-lever)

Post by Ysabel Kid »

My children were off school today and I took vacation to enjoy it with them and finish up the laundry room remodeling project from the infamous "honey-do" list. First thing I took my son, Ysabel Kid's Kid here (a.k.a., Y2K or YKK) to the range for some quality father-son time. I let him choose the firearms, and he picked an interesting pair.

First one we shot was a P-08, a.k.a. a "Luger". This is a World-War II issue which has the Nazi proof marks. I don't have access to my files, so can't recall the exact date of manufacture. I'll look it up and add the info when I add pictures to this post (haven't taken them yet). It has been at least 15 years since I shot this pistol.

For those not familiar with the Luger, it is a joy to hold, but IMHO a PITA to actually shoot. It is stiff and very finicky on what it will digest. We started with 115-grain FMJ's, and finished with some 124-grain FMJ's. I know from past experience that if I load anything other than a FMJ into it, it won't chamber the round. It was accurate, but my son was seldom able to get off more than 3 shots in a row without it jamming. Part of this was that he was limp-wristing the handgun. He is used to single-actions, letting them roll in his grip, so this was to be expected as he learns to shoot semi-auto's.

Staying in the same theme, the other pistol he chose was a P-38. He enjoyed shooting that one much more, as did I. This is also a World-War II issued sidearm with the Nazi proof marks on it. Both belongs to his grandfather (my father). I hadn't shot this one for 15 years or more either - I just have other more modern weapons to shoot, and to me the 9mm round is not nostalgic. Still, it was very enjoyable. I kick myself every time I handle or shoot it - when I was in high school someone offered to sell me one for $50. I had one already (the one we shot today), and suspected the weapon might be warm, so declined. It would have made a nice pair - if I was sure it wasn't stolen.

The P-38 shot the 115-grainers and 124-grainers with equal ethusiasm, though I'd give the 124-grainers the edge based on my shooting. These old warhorses have plenty of fight left in them, though again, given any choice at all, I wouldn't go with the Luger!

Nothing like shooting with one's son or daughter. I'll be in a good mood the rest of the year.

Pictures to come - had to hit the laundry room project right away when I got home. The end is finally in sight!!!

Kid,
We need more father's like you. Good deed. :D But I have to warn you that you might be creating a monster. I won't tell you directly but these are a few messages I get from my son.

"Hey Dad, when you get a chance, pick me up a nice pre-war 1894 in 38-55. I want it to have a real nice bore" or

"Hey Dad, Tell Tommy I want one of those new Colt AR-15 Law Enforcement Carbines. You pay for it and I'll pay you back" or

"Hey Dad, Can you send me out about 5000 large rifle primers, and while your at it, included 3 or 4000 small rifle primers"

Thats OK though, when you get these messages, you will have a good warm feeling knowing that you brought him up right! I treasure all the memories that my son and I had with shooting, hunting, going to gunshows, etc., and our current playtimes shooting, hunting, going to gunshows, etc. And I bet he does too:D :D It will make life long "buddies" of you guys.

The Lugers and P-38's are fun and nostalgic to play with. Funny how most of us don't think of the 9mm as "nostalgic". Its been around for well over a hundred years. ------------Sixgun

Sounds like y'all had a great time. I think it may have to wait to warm up before the boys and I go shooting again. They dont have as much fun when they are cold.

Great report and it sounds like you a way to much fun!
honey do list.....better finish yours...or mamma aint gonna be happy!

You lugers reminded me of a story my Dad told me..
He grew up in Germany during the WWII...
He was around ten years old when Americans finally made it
to his home town of Wurzburg Germany....As you can imagine...
it was quite tough to make a living...My Dad made friends with
the American soldiers and would bring the "stuff" to trade for food..
One day he approched the gate of the American base and lifted his shirt...
and his waist band was lined with lugers...He would pick them up off
the streets or off dead soldiers...He also traded the daggers the officers carried...
Every time I go to a gun show and see a luger or a dagger...
I just have to wonder.....mmm

Re: OT - Range report (non-lever) - pic added!

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Well, as promised, here is a picture of the guns we shot last week. I took the picture the next day, but was without my laptop to download it to until late Friday, and just got around to downloading it this evening. Sorry to keep you all waiting!

These were fun to shoot. Y2K asked what other 9mm handguns I had, and I showed him a few more - all more modern. He liked the feel of the Hi-Power clone I own, so we'll try that one next! :D

Nice looking lugers. They look to be well taken in that shape they should find their way into the hands of your grandkids for decades of fun. :)

That's the plan Jeremy - I just hope they can own and shoot them in the future!

The P-08 appears to be refinished. All the serial numbers match, but the letters is slightly worn, which makes me believe the gun was refinished at some point prior to my Dad buying it. The grips are not original - something I may need to change, though they are nice grips.

The P-38 is original, and all the parts match. I even have an original holster for it somewhere in the ol' holster box. :D
