Ready as we are gonna get, Updated with pics

Post by Buffboy »

The wife and I went out to sight in deer rifles yesterday. We both have double tags. I thought I was gonna have to work this weekend but that's changed so I'm going to be able to go the first weekend. The wife got her 300sav 99 dialed in while I got my 38-55 marlin checked, the 454 carbine and pistol. The 38-55 needed a little drift to the left and the 454s needed elevation adjustments (new load). Zeroed the carbine 3" high at 100 and the revolver 2" high at 50. Thinking I may hunt the 454 after I get the first with the 38-55.

Good luck!

This weekend is the firearms opener here too. We are under a point restriction this year in the county I hunt, so it will be a big one or a doe for me.

Wife got a deer this afternoon. I took off work at noon and we ran out to where we hunt. Finally decided to walk this little dam area in a hayland so I stopped at the tailwater and sent the wife to the other end to block. Cold, windy I saw a couple little mulies get up ahead of me and saw them run right to where I'd told her to go. I never heard any shots. I get about to the end and there's the wife walking toward a little gully. She drops down below the hill and when I get there, she holds up this head and grins(a really big grin that I can see from 60 yards away). Right through the heart at about 200 yards with her 300 Savage 99. I never even heard the shot. A nice 4X4 mulie buck. I was all set to scold her for not shooting one of those does. She's still bouncing off the walls. I went back toward the pickup and there were those two does I'd chased out standing broadside at about 250 yards. Lined up on what I thought was the biggest and dropped the hammer on the marlin. Deer ran a ways and fell over. I was a little off on my range but I held the wind about perfect. Must have been only about 200. Hit it high in the lungs. Turned out to be a yearling buck. She's still got her antlerless tag left and I've got the any deer tag. Half done. Sorry about the lack of picture of my little buck, I was busy skinning hers and we ran out of light.

You can't eat antlers but those sure look nice. Don't see much headgear around here lately. At least I don't. I think the ladies have a knack. Young lady I know took her 3-month old daughter out and has killed 3 so far. She used a .375 H&H on one... I think they can see 'em easier.

Both deer are in a tote locked in the back of my Blaser cut down if not completely boned yet. It's about 20 degrees this morning so it will be fine. That tote must weigh 150#, that buck was a tank and fat like a doe. My little yearling was quite the butterball too.
You know as she was downloading her camera she said "dang, I forgot to have my rifle in the picture". I've posted a picture of her with the rifle before but here it is again.
Image

I joked as we were leaving the field that maybe we should see if we can get a better rifle for her than that old Savage. Her look was as if I'd told her I was secretly torturing kittens. I won't repeat the exact words she said at that point, family forum, yah-know. She did mention in our one way "conversation" that her Ruger Stainless Compact 243 may become official trading fodder now but the Savage wasn't going anywhere.

I expected her buck might be a bit strong tasting like my mulie buck from a couple years ago but if the tenderloins I cooked for supper last night are an indication. That's NOT A PROBLEM, yum.

Her story shortened so it will fit without a couple pages: After she left the pickup, she walked toward a creek that deer kind of funnel to on this dam. She said a mulie fawn and a big doe got up but didn't wait around for a shot. She was cussing that a bit. She walked a little further and this bad boy stood up. She said she about freaked but she told herself to calm down. She sat with her shooting sticks(that she insisted I buy for her a little over a week ago), he stopped broadside to look at her again and she let him have it.

The bullet performed perfectly(150gr Hornady Interlok). There wasn't any heart to save, it was just mush when I field dressed it as were the lower lungs. It exited with about a 1" hole.

Oh, by the way, the bullet and load from my Marlin 1893 38-55 performed perfectly too. But then it was one of those jacketed bullets from Stone Fence so that's not surprising. Thanks Dave.

Well I got my buck today. Walking a little draw and I spotted him laying down at about 90 yards. All I could see was his head and neck. He was looking away and I reached into my pocket to get my little binocs and they weren't there. Nuts, left them in the pickup. Well he looked big enough so I hit him in the back of the neck. He flopped around for a bit then came stumbling up out of the draw and I hit him again through the shoulder. He's all in all done, a doe came busting out and headed over the hill toward my wife. One whitetail buck in the bag. I holler to her about the doe. I hear a shot and a ricochet. I walk up over to look and she'd missed. Hasn't got those running shots down yet  . She didn't get a second shot as the doe ran into some cows.

We get mine loaded and we are heading down to the ranch yard down this winding trail to field dress(rancher wants us to feed his cats). Wife yells: Stop! I looked out my window and there's two deer just laying there about 100 yards up this little draw. She gets out and she can't see through her scope because of the sun. She finally gets her shooting sticks set up and I tell her the one on the right is the biggest, aim about 2 foot below her left ear. Boom, deer stands up right in front of the other one so she can't shoot again. The deer teeters a bit then lays down, a few seconds later she drops her head. Ok, we are filled up with her mulie doe.
Image

She hit it right where I told her to. The bullet went in by the left front shoulder and unfortunately exited the right hindquarter. Made a mess of the one quarter but they are both skinned, quartered, and in the tote cooling down. Started at 8, had two deer by 11. Must have seen 50, most at long range. They were running all over the place.

Every man needs a woman like that, and that old Savage of hers don't owe either of you anything about now. Good thing the season is over for you two, deer population might get to hurting if you went out again!!  Big congrats to you both, you got some good eating ahead.

Excellent! I love that old Marlin you're using. That's a nice Whitetail buck. Sounds like you'd better not come between that Savage 99 and your wife. I don't blame her for setting you straight on that account. Thanks for the post and the photos.
