OT: A wonderful Thanksgiving.
My wife and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I hope all of you did too.
For the last 5 or 6 years she's had to work on Thanksgiving and so we did without or had ours later. Today she was off. So we got our turkey dinner with all the trimmings and even a nice pumpkin pie. Ahhhhhh, I'm stuffed.
After that we went down in the basement and while I sized bullets and prepped some cases she did some sewing. It's the first time we've been able to work on our projects together in piece and quiet in so long I can't remember the last time.
Take care every one.

Re: OT: A wonderful Thanksgiving.
Sounds good Joe.
Yes, we had a good Thanksgiving here as well. My wife, who couldn't boil water without Betty Crocker on the phone coaching her when we married, has turned into an excellent cook. I've watched her TG day feast go from tragic to tolerable to downright awesome over the years. Today's feast was absolutely spot on, and yes, pumpkin pie for dessert (after a nap)
We spent the evening curled up in front of the tube, then soaked in the hot tub for awhile with a little cocktail.
It don't git much better

Re: OT: A wonderful Thanksgiving.
Glad to hear you had such a nice day.
We had a great day too. My wife and boys and I went to my mother's. Where she always makes enough for 30 people.
My dad called from Grenada and my sister called via internet / video from Singapore ( we're spread out a bit
)
Plus it just happened to be my B-day and I got a nifty little 1000 W generator. I've been wanting a small / quiet one to
take to the cabin to run a few lights and charge batteries.

Glad to hear it Joe.
We wont be having ours until tomorrow the In-Laws don't fly out until tonight. We just threw our turkey in the bucket to brine over night should be nice and juicy for tomorrow.

What do put the turkey in? A juicy turkey is something to enjoy.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
My wife and I decided to help others on Thanksgiving so instead of a gathering at home the two of us went to The Kitchen in Springfield, MO and helped feed those who are less fortunate than ourselves. It was a great day!
Now .. to be totally up front, we did celebrate Thanksgiving last week. My Mom has been diagnosed with terminal cancer just recently, so the family came together from all over the country and celebrated Thanksgiving .. and her life .. and spent time together last week. It was a good time and we felt no need to "double up" ... plus it gave us a great opportunity to do something for others.
Seeing others who are less fortunate than ourselves and just sharing with them really opens the eyes ... you know the old story .. I felt sorry for myself that I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet ...

You need a 5 gallon bucket and a clean trash bag for starts.
3cups Salt
1cup Sugar
10 Pepper Corns
Gal Water
Thats the basics we also add the following to taste but you could do what ever your tastebuds desire.
Allspice berries
Basil
Time
Orange or Apples (sliced)
Cloves
Put the trash bag in the bucket as a liner then add dry ingredients
Once you have put the ingredients in the bucket add 1/2gal of water then put the bird (or roast works great with pork roasts also) in the bucket add the other 1/2gal of water. Leave to soak overnight if you live in colder climes you can put the bucket in the garage so you don't fill up your fridge. If you don't have a garage you do like me and put it outside covered with plywood and a brick so the critters don't get into it.
Cook like you would normally

+1 on the brine thing. This was our first year doing that. 100X better than injecting!JReed wrote:Glad to hear it Joe.

Our Thanksgiving was great and I hope the same for one and all.
One thing on the brine though. We went out and bought an igloo 5 gallon drink cooler and it worked wonderfully. We used 1 gallon of ice water and one gallon of brine, slapped the lid on it and put it on the picnic table on the deck and let it set for 10-12 hours (over night) T-Day morning the bird was very cold, very flavorful and very juicy. It is a "must try" and the family decided that it is the only way to go.
PS: if you're going to give it a try; put the bird in the brine bucket "head first".
Re: OT: A wonderful Thanksgiving.
My wife and I had a really good Thanksgiving too. It's the first Thanksgiving I've had off in 6 years. We slept in late, then took in an afternoon movie (Australia..very good movie). Then since it was the only thing open we had a Dominoes carry out pizza for her and hot chicken wings for me. We went down to the local reservoir and ate our food while overlooking the lake.
Our kids and grandkids will all be here on Sunday for the "big one", I'm looking forward to it, as we haven't all been together for sometime now. We don't do the traditional turkey as by the time they all have been to their "other" parents, everyone is tired of turkey. We are having barbecue ribs, parmesan chicken, and other fixins, and I'm going to bake up Slimsters recipe for baked vidalias in cream sauce.
Glad the rest of you had good times and/or good times coming.

Still... so... full...
Can... barely... type...
It was wonderful. We gathered at the club house at the condo my Mom lives in. About 30 people altogther, between my siblings, their spouses and children, my immediate family, my aunt, cousins and their families and my step-family. Way too much food!
Went back to my place with some of my step-family afterwards. My nephew is a Marine back from Iraq and now looking to sign on with local law enforcement. We had an extra bed and he needed one, so we gave it to him to help get him started. While at home I opened the safe to play "show and tell" for him, his father (my step-brother) and my other nephews (one an Army vet from Iraq). They were like kids in a candy store. Took me 3 hours afterwards to wipe everything down, which I needed to do anyway. Sure was a lot of fun!
