OT-Shot me a running doe at 350+yards

Post by WCF3030 »

This hunt started last Friday when my sister offered me to hunt on her property. I set a date for Sunday to hunt with my father. He would hunt the interior and I would cover the fields. Except for my 30-30's I really only have one other rifle that could do the job. A Savage 110 Tactical in 300 Win. OK so I've got the rifle but the only non-30-30 hunting bullet I have is the Hornady 180 RN. Not exactly a bean field bullet. I also "only" loaded it to 2700 fps, which is the max suggested for that bullet.
Saturday I Zeroed 2in high at 100yds and cased the rifle and waited for Sundays hunt. At the last moment I opted for the 30-30 instead and slipped into the blind for a very cold morning of hunting. After a couple hours I finally saw a deer running through the other field and easy 300 yards out. No shot at that range. Then a little later I saw another around 200yds but was not able to shoot that one either. So I went home empty handed.
This morning I went out again but this time with the 300. After 4 hours in the blind I catch a flicker of movement and there are 2 does Hell bent in crossing the field in front of me.
I had actually ranged in my head earlier certain spots and there distances. I raised up the rifle sitting cross legged with my elbows resting on my legs, put the cross hairs at back level, led her by 3 feet and touched off a round.
Saw no reaction to my hit but I felt good about the shot and decided to cross the field and check it out anyways.
2/3 of the way across I look back at my ever shrinking blind and thought I was nuts for taking that shot. I practice for a good 2-3 times a week shooting all times of the year, but not for a shot like this and not with that rifle.
I find in the snow where they had crossed and about where I had shot but no blood. Walk another 10yds and saw some spots of blood then more and then a large trail. I look up and see the base of a tree smeared in blood and along side a huge doe. Perfect double lung!
I again thank God for the gift and jog on back to get the 4 wheeler.(another benefit of hunting on private property)

Here is a pick of the view. In the upper right corner where the field meets the woods is a green dot, that is where the doe was on a dead run.

Nice shooting. Why is your deer hanging upside down? :o

Nice going - the fact that you compensated with the crosshairs and took the shot demonstrates you level of confidence. Excellent

Good job! Personally, I really like my 300 Winnie mag. Looks like yours is a good fit too.

Nice shot! Congrats on a nice doe! Bet that's some good eatin there!

And after hunting this past weekend with RKrodle and Bonedigger at the Angelina Natl. Forest, I decided I needed a ground blind too. Got one at cabelas yesterday - it's a standard green folding chair/lounger with a blind attached - you sit in the chair and the blind then unfolds over and in front of you - all the way around. Pretty cool. Packs into a 12 pound bag with strap that's easy to carry. Looking forward to using it again in a few weeks on the next hunt with those guys (and some more hopefully).

I don't know why that one is hung that way, but we hung ours that way because it's about a thousand times easier to get the hide off. when they're warm you can get them skinned in about four minutes because it was designed to peel thataway.

Great story and a great shot. What's all that white stuff on the ground?

WCF3030,
Great story and fantastic shot! Congrats!

I hang my deer that way also, easier to skin (IMO), and allows more blood to drain from the neck while I'm quartering and can proceed to de-veining and wrapping the neck into a roast before sawing the quarters into steaks. Been told I'm doing it WRONG; but that's the way I was taught and it works for me; although I've done the hindquarters on a gimble thingie and it works also.

Thing is, I'm not kidding. When I was an acting FO at Graf, for fire missions I would range a target on the Impact Area - say a specific tree - and call in a single ranging shot.

You know, you're supposed to bracket the target before calling for FFE, but I had this annoying propensity to call in a ranger, and radio/VFMED back "target destroyed" 'cause there was nothing left to aim at.

I was good with a range fan.

Annoyed the Pi$$ out of my FDC...

If the batteries were laid properly (and they usually were... we tended to win RTEPs...) I could generally drop a single 8" PD within a couple of feet. Wanted to try the Pickup Truck trick (one round, in the bed) but could never get permission/a scrap truck.

Really dose not matter to me which way it hangs. I've come to like it this way, because you can use the quad to skin it.
Actually you're doing it the right way. If you hang it upside down the eyes will bulge out, and for the rest of your life you'll be looking at a deer on the wall with eyes bulging out at you. :P

I have a question about using the quad to skin it. Do you hook a chain to the quad, and then to the hide, slit it, and pull it off in one piece? How does that work?

Cut around the neck and the front legs. Cut a hole through the hide up by the neck. Run a rope through the hole, tie a knot to the hide attach rope to quad, put in gear and give it a little gas. Hide will pull down to the hind legs.
