First one we shot was a P-08, a.k.a. a "Luger". This is a World-War II issue which has the Nazi proof marks. I don't have access to my files, so can't recall the exact date of manufacture. I'll look it up and add the info when I add pictures to this post (haven't taken them yet). It has been at least 15 years since I shot this pistol.
For those not familiar with the Luger, it is a joy to hold, but IMHO a PITA to actually shoot. It is stiff and very finicky on what it will digest. We started with 115-grain FMJ's, and finished with some 124-grain FMJ's. I know from past experience that if I load anything other than a FMJ into it, it won't chamber the round. It was accurate, but my son was seldom able to get off more than 3 shots in a row without it jamming. Part of this was that he was limp-wristing the handgun. He is used to single-actions, letting them roll in his grip, so this was to be expected as he learns to shoot semi-auto's.
Staying in the same theme, the other pistol he chose was a P-38. He enjoyed shooting that one much more, as did I. This is also a World-War II issued sidearm with the Nazi proof marks on it. Both belongs to his grandfather (my father). I hadn't shot this one for 15 years or more either - I just have other more modern weapons to shoot, and to me the 9mm round is not nostalgic. Still, it was very enjoyable. I kick myself every time I handle or shoot it - when I was in high school someone offered to sell me one for $50. I had one already (the one we shot today), and suspected the weapon might be warm, so declined. It would have made a nice pair - if I was sure it wasn't stolen.
The P-38 shot the 115-grainers and 124-grainers with equal ethusiasm, though I'd give the 124-grainers the edge based on my shooting. These old warhorses have plenty of fight left in them, though again, given any choice at all, I wouldn't go with the Luger!
Nothing like shooting with one's son or daughter. I'll be in a good mood the rest of the year.
Pictures to come - had to hit the laundry room project right away when I got home. The end is finally in sight!!!
