OT-partially..Garand and brass

Post by morgan in nm »

Saw something weird the other day. I lodge brother called me to look at a rifle for him that he just bought. He said it was a garand so I brought my tools and gauges and books to look it over. I wish I had a camera with me as it was definately a slobber alert. He told me he bought it from an elderly gentleman who has had that rifle since 1954. Folks, I looked over it with a magnifying glass and I believe it to be unfired, unrebuilt March of 1945 Springfield  There was no wear in the finish anywhere on the rifle and all parts were correct for known unrebuilt rifles of that month and year. I grudgingly handed it back to him with my opinions and of course told him that I couldn't be positive. Is there such thing as an unfired garand still wondering around out there not in museams or arsenals?

Now for the on-topic portion of this message. Went to the scrap yards today looking for tractor parts and noticed a 55 gallon drum sitting there near the scales. Upon further inspection, it was completely full of brass. It was mixed but I was able to gather a 5 gallon bucket load of 30-30 for a buck a pound. Upon seperation of manufacturers, there was some norma 30-30. I didn't know they ever made any. I was digging through this barrel and also found a multitude of levergun brass such as 444, 25-35, 218bee, and many others. I will try and go back tomorrow and spend a few hours sorting it to see what I can come up with.

I bought an 03A3 Remington a few years ago... been in a closet since 1950 or so. I wont swear it was "unfired" but it sure didnt spend much time in an armory rack or being striped for practice on a GI cot.

It's had 20 rounds through it since I bought it. I have a Santa Fe commercial version for a shooter so that gets shot much more than that.
