New to Me Marlin
My latest purchase, is a 1988 mfg 336 30-30. Got it at the gun show yesterday for $200, it is quite dirty, but both wood and metal are in fine shape, action is smooth as silk and while it has been shot some it hasn't been hurt a bit, the only knock I have on it is the forearm is a bit loose, but I can fix it. Now I have to clean it up, but I am very pleased. My oldest is wanting another lever gun, and so I may go ahead and give him the new 336 I traded for back in the summer, and keep this older one for myself.

My lovely young wife bought me one at the last gun show we were able to attend. About the same shape. A few scratches and bumps but otherwise smooth condition . It had a scope mount that I didn't care for ,not into scopes on lever guns I gave it to my favorite gun dealer in exchange for some screws as hole fillers. Shoots great . Even wound up with a free Blueing job . All was well. Only $ 200 ................Sounds like you got a good deal . Happy for you and your young'n also.

I am really happy with the new toy. It will clean up real nice. Now I think I am going to try to find a rough one to re-finish. I am thinking of a shorter stock, barrel, and mag and make a little trapper type. Guy called this afternoon and said he had one with a real rough stock (behind the seat gun) that he wanted to get rid off. He is supposed to come by this week and bring it by. If it is good mechanically then I may go ahead and get it and try to make it into a new toy. I would love a straight stocked one for the project but haven't been able to find one.

OK finally got a chance to play with the new/old rifle. Found out the old scope on it was junk (wasn't expecting anything less), but was able to shoot 3 good 3 shot groups outta 4 and the other was not not bad. 150gr winchesters at 40 yards using the open sights (factory originals) 1st group was just under .75, next was over an inch, but the next two were tight. both just a shade under .5 looking like kinda ragged big holes. It shoots better than the NIB 336 I got earlier this year. Sat down and gave her a nice cleaning and it really looks pretty good. I am thinking about putting a rear peep on it, instead of more glass (any suggestions for good peeps would be appreciated). I have my BLR if I want to shoot longer range and I have remember how much I really like shooting with just open sights.
I have a line on a rough 336 (truck gun cheap) and if I get it, I was thinking also about getting the barrel cut down to 16 1/2 and re-crowned, and was wondering how much it is going for these days. The older gentleman who I used to get to do my smithing passed away a couple of years back and I haven't talked to anyone local since. I also was curious what decent bluing jobs are going for.

Here are a couple of before pics. I have pulled the scope, ordered a receiver sight and cleaned her up. I will have to get my camera out and take some after pics.
