Any good .30-30 recipes?

Most any factory load will work just fine. The trick (as with any hunting) is put it in the right spot the first time.

All of the ones for 150 or 170 gr bullets are good. You need to find the one in your reloading manual that works best (read-most accurate) for your rifle of choice. Start with what's listed in the Lyman reloading manual--they don't market any jacketed bullets, so they are not particularly biased according to brand. Pay attention to what JMT said in his post this morning. "...Put it in the right spot the first time". Not even the biggest whiz-bang shortymag is going to make up for making a bad shot.

I like 28 grains of 3031 with a 150 grain bullet.

Jacketed...29gr IMR 30-31 170gr cor-loc.

Cast....28.5gr H-335 173gr Lyman.

150 grain speer, 37 grains W748 for 2250 fps from a 20" carbine - maximum load
170 grain speer, 34 grains W748 for 2150 fps from a 20" carbine - maximum load

Basically factory duplication loads.

I use Winchester LR primers and usually RP brass.

Do not substitute other brands of bullets with these loads - speer uses a softer guilding metal than most...

JIm T is spot on, which ever 150 or 170 gr factory load your rifle likes will take out any deer ever made. My favorite was the Hornady 150's.
Reloading for hunting the bullets I've had the best results with are the Speers. Powders that have really shined are 748 ,rl15 and Ramshots Biggame.

Agreed:) That is why I am the only one at camp (other than my wife) that uses a caliber that doesn't end with the word magnum. I have never used more than one bullet on a deer. Still, I just figured I'd have a blast working up my own ammunition.

Many summers back, before I was old and greying, I was loading for my 30-30s. I tried the log powders and got tired of weighing each charge for consistancy. I found one of my favorite gun shops had started carrying Winchester ball powders. I got one of Winchesters load data pamphlets and a pound of 748 and have never looked back.
34.5grs of 748 under which ever 150gr jacketed bullet my 94s liked best has been the utmost consistent load for me. In the blistering hot Arizona desert to the cold mountains it's performed as expected.

Win cases - usually but not necessary
Win LR primers - standard version, magnums not needed
34.5grs Win 748 - straight from the Win data book
150gr bullet - your rifles choice: Speer, Remington, Winchester, Hornady, Sierra, etc.

That's my go to load. I don't even bother with any other.

My favored load:

Federal cases, WLR primers, 27grains of RL-7 behind a 150 Sierra bullet or my #316Lyman GC mold of 6 parts WW to 1 part Linotype.

I have had great luck with 32.0 grains of Varget and the Sierra ProHunter 170 grain bullet. I use any old case and non magnum primers. I have yet to see a 30-30 that would not shoot this load well.

My 336 seems to really like 36 grains of BLC2 under a 150 grain jacketed bullet.
