a pal's rifle .... found in the closet
just got an e-mail from a pal. His really really old aunt called him yesterday, "Hey, I got this Winchester lever action rifle in the closet, been here forever. It was your grandpa's rifle, I got it from him but we've never fired it."
So, here's the info on it: it is a Winchester Model 1892, .25-20 WCI (WCF ??), and a serial number check says it was manufactured in 1907. Supposedly in really good material condition, not beat up or banged around.
My pal is of course mildly curious at what something like might be worth in very round ballpark numbers.
I of course am yelling myself hoarse telling him to get it over to my house so we can check it out.
Cheers,
Carl

It has no monetary value. It and any info about his granpa and the gun will be priceless to his grandkids.
Kind regards,

Not enough.
I have had some stupid moments in my life but selling Pappaw's Browning shotgun, a couple of .22 rifles including a Winchester semi auto, etc. were among the most idiotic.

The only way that gun should be sold is if your buddy is desperate/determined to sell it... then YOU buy it - for whatever he asks.
Then shoot it, treat it nice, and keep it safe.
Someday your buddy will be kicking himself and wanting it back.
Sell it back to him for cost + Beer & "told-ya-so" Rights.

Been there, done that. Actually (technically) putting a lot of money into just such a gun. While I don't actually expect the "rightful" owner to ask for it back (neither he nor his girls are particularly into guns - AND he lives in CA now) it is conceivable.Tristan wrote:You, Sir, qualify as a 'Real Friend'.Old Ironsights wrote:The only way that gun should be sold is if your buddy is desperate/determined to sell it... then YOU buy it - for whatever he asks.
