Way, way OT---40mm case picked up at steel yard

Post by Thunder50 »

Figured someone here would know about this.
Went to the metal yard to try and find a piece of aluminum to mount the press I bought. Nothing new in what I wanted, so browsed looking for Wheelweights and looked in a box that usually has range brass in it. Saw this in there, so picked it up and bought it (2 lbs of brass--not cheap).
Found a piece of scrap aluminum plate 5/16 thick and 20" x 18" that finally cost me $4 :D , lot cheaper than the new stuff I was looking for.

Back to the shell. On the base it has 1-1945 R.V., what looks like an anchor symbol, 1 DT, 1196, 40mm MK2. Percussion primed. Brass is just over 12" long
Just a quick guess on my part---40mm Bofors?

Sorry for the poor pics

Did the Navy ever use Oerlikon 40mms or were they just 20mm?

A lever? Probably not. A Blunderbuss, maybe...

Heck, I'd neck that puppy down to about .45 caliber, and see if you could get a Handi-rifle chambered in it!
That way when they ban the .50's, you'd have something politically correct because it would be smaller than .50!

Now ya get yerself a brass 105mm shell and wack 'er off about 2" above the base... drill out the primers on both shells.. solder the 40 on the 105 case and ya got yerself a dandy brass lamp sichy-ation.. Course you'd want to shine 'em up too

You see that guy in the second picture handing ammunition up through the hatch? He's a Gunner's Mate. That's an old picture (WWII or earlier) because he's wearing his rank on his right sleeve and he has 3-Chevrons which makes him a Gunner's Mate First Class (GM1).

Anyway, when I first went in the Navy they asked if i wanted to strike for (be a) Gunner's Mate. At first I thought it sounded pretty good and then I found out that if the ship were hit and a fire broke out the first thing they did was close all ammunition space hatches and then flood the compartments even if there were guys in them. When I found that out, I said, "Uh, I don't think so!!!!!!"

If that ship he is on was on fire, they'd slam that hatch and flood the compartment whether he could get out or not. Believe me!!! It happened frequently during WWII.

Oh, I struck for Cryptologic Technician -- a much safer rating.
