450 Marlin LeverEvolution issues.

Post by 2ndovc »

Quick trip to the range on this twenty degree morning for a couple more practice shots
from my .450 scout rifle and just for kicks decided to try a couple rounds of the 325 Gr LE
ammo I picked up recently to see how they compared to the 350 Horn. FP at 100 yds

Starting with two rounds in the magazine. First one cycled just fine. fired and hit about
1 1/2" higher than the 350 FP.
ejection was stiff and then the second round was out of the magizine and stuck on the lifter.
Action now completely stuck open!
I pushed it back in with a screw driver and levered it out.
Repeated the whole process and it happened again.
looked as though the cartgidge was sitting at an upward angle but that could have been
the lifter pressing against it.

Back to the 350 FPs and worked just fine for another ten rounds.
This rifle has never liked longer bullets but this is a first.
Not planing on doing anything else with this stuff just curious as to why
this happened with an otherwise totally reliable rifle.

JB, I had the same issues with my 45-70 guide gun and that ammo. Everything else was fine, just the LE stuff. You have to call Marlin and get one of their re-designed lifters if you want to use the LE ammo. That's what I did and it works perfect with all ammo now.

Maybe a dumb question, but how many different kinds of carriers are there for the Marlins (336 & 1894)? My .45-70 wouldn't feed "Leverevolution" ammo, but I only bought a box on a lark, however I MAY want to reload different style bullets.

Are there just "improved" carriers that feed most anything better, or are there ones for different weights/lengths/styles of bullet? Is the same applicable to the .444, .35 Rem, .44 Mag, etc...?

Part of the reason I was wondering is I was thinking about getting a couple spare carriers for down the road if one breaks and our then-police-state won't allow parts purchases.

AJMD429, The new lifter was designed around the LE ammo for the XLR series of Marlins. That's the way it was explained to me by a Customer Service Representative when I called Marlin about it last year. Those are the only change I've heard of otherwise. I'm guessing they ran into the problem before most of us did. She told me it was no big deal and was fairly common. They sent me the new lifter, no charge, after I explained the situation to her. I don't know if they still do that or not. Thanks, Tom

Wouldn't ya know it, Marlin waited until just after I bought an 1895M (I heard the news RIGHT after I bought the .450) to announce they were making that stainless beast. Bad timing on my part AGAIN!
