Yippee! Savage arrived today! UPDATE- Range Report

Post by cutter »

It's going to need a lot of cleaning, and I think that is a BB gun scope. The wood looks rather unique.

I hope to get to the range tommorow. Haven't any loaded 308's yet.
This is a model 99C. Does anyone know what weight bullets these prefer?

Oh, and do I get to be a member of the Savage Club now?

Well guys, I thinks it's a keeper.

Image
I fired three , three shot groups. One from each of my carry pistols, and one from the Savage, all at 100 yrds.
Group #1 Is the Savage. I don't have any appropriate hunting bullets, so I shortened my target load to function through the magazine. This load consist of Hornady 168gr BTHP Match bullets and 42.0gr Varget. I think that is fair for open sights?

Group #2 is from the 1911, and #3 from the Ruger ( the third shot never made it to paper.

Anyway, I appriciate your knowledge and advice concerning these fine old rifles. Thanks guys!

P.S. That purple scope that was on the rifle, it is a Bushenell Sportview. thing, only has about an inch and a half of eye relief and will not focus. Must be one of those Wal Mart specials?

That's a nice looking 99! Love .308, can't wait to hear how it shoots. The BLR I had really liked Rem. 150 SPs. My M-14s don't. 165s or nothing!

Have fun!

Good Looking savage I've been looking for something just like that also :)
With a .45cal entrance wound I don't worry too much about bullet expansion.

cutter,........Sweet lookin rifle. The optimum bullet weight will depend on the twist-rate of your barrel, but Varget & Reloader-15 will be good powders. jd45

Try some Nosler ballistic-tip 168grSPBT over IMR4064.

I think the old man uses just under what the Hornady book lists for maximum load in IMR4064 and gets fantasic groups in his Ruger M77.

And go get a nice Leupold for that sucker!

It's a beauty!

My 99C shoots Hornady 165 BTSP's extremely well. So well that, I haven't bothered experimenting with others.

Good luck with yours.

Good shootin'! Getting 2 out of 3 with a snubby on paper at 100 yards is impressive! :D At least to me!
Have you hugged your rifle today?

Thanks guys! And after all the 99's I've passed up over the years because of ignorance...

That Ruger group was shot after a considerable amount of warmup on the gong. My load shoots almost four feet low at that distance, so I hold the rear sight about a quater under the front post.
